I have recently been diagnosed with IBS and feel a bit confused about the whole thing. My Dr loaded me up with pills and packets and told me to follow something like a slimming world type diet.
On the advice of a friend I tried giving up lactose (which worked great for 3 days but seems to now be having the reverse affect!)
I am completely confused and don’t know which way to turn, can anyone help?

It can be confusing - and remain confusing - as you navigate all the different ways to manage IBS. Which type of IBS do you have? “IBS-D” where you have to go to the toilet a lot? Or “IBS-C” with constipation?
There are many things you can try in order to ease symptoms but different things do or don’t work for different people x
Hi 👋 yes I agree its very confusing I got diagnosed 20 years ago and for quite a few years I only took Buscopan and it did work. I have IBS-C and was told at the beginning to only eat a high fibre diet to help with the constipation but it didn’t agree with me and for many years put up with bloating due to eating high fibre. It’s only recently I’ve found which foods are ok to eat and which are not. It was only when I found this site that I came across the fodmap diet, I hadn’t heard of it before then so I try and follow that. You will find out what foods you can tolerate and ones that you can’t it’s just really trial and error but this site really does have very good advice plus you don’t feel that you are suffering on your own. Good luck with finding what’s best for you.
I got diagnosed about 8 months ago but have known ive had funny belly as my mum used to call it since i was about 5! It used to b more a nervous belly but now it more food related.
I have found out im also gluten and dairy intolerant so that la added bonus NOT!
I have now been gluten and dairy( also yeast as it really bloats me up) free for 6 months and it goin well im glad i done it...
I feel more
Comfortable not so bloated and nauseous all time, i have lost alot of weight as im not eating stodge just clean food lots of veg and chicken and rice and gluten free foods and it seems to b controling it all.
I think that prob best way to go i seen a good gastro dr and she said most ibs is due to a intolerance to something and it just finding it but she would tell everyone to start with dairy and gluten as it is so bad to digest anyway. Plus red meat.
I also take a probiotic( bioglans flora) a digestive enzyme and peppermint oil capsules half hour before i eat a meal three times a day which helps me digest and also gives me healthy gut flora and stops the constant wind or indigestion which ive had once in 6 months which is a miracle as it was my worse symtom... always in pain with trapped wind now i had it yesterday for forst time in months and that was because i decided to give alcohol a try after year off and my belly still does not like it...
U will get used to it and u will find ur triggers try to do the gluten dairy thing it may help u...
Ur also find that most ibs sufferers have problems with garlic onions brocoli cabbage and cauliflour so if u eat alot of them try to cut that out aswell . Put green beans and spinach in diet instead of above
Small update, so far I am getting the hang of this. I started taking probiotic pills and digestive enzymes and have not really had anything but minor problems.
I have had to cut out lactose (Soya milk was not a success so I am on now on lactose free milk) and seem to have issues with peppers and onions but otherwise I am doing well
