My doctors put me on these. I’d say there great for sleeping but don’t seem to be helping anything else. I am still using codeine to control the symptoms. I don’t use them every day. But I find they work. The most I use is 3 or maybe 4 on a bad day. I prefer them to Imodium because for some reason Imodium give me terrible cramps.
Anyway IBS is an absolute awful condition and I sympathise with anyone who’s got it.
I actually think I’ll be forced into taking a VR package in work because even with the codeine I am still not on top of the symptoms. I have a very restricted diet. Don’t have any gluten or lactose but still find I can eat the same food for 10 days then have a flare up.
Does anyone else have any other remedies for me to try? Has anyone done meditation for this? Plus does anyone have anything for the nausea that I keep getting, that comes in waves and is so debilitating.

Hi Daz, a good illustration of how medicine can be quite individual is that having tried lots of things this is the only drug i have tried that actually helps reduce my symptoms and unlike your experience it does not make me sleepy. You don't say how long you have been on them, but they can take several weeks to take effect. Also if you are on 15mg you can increase dose to 30mg (in consultation with your GP/Gastro) in case that might help. I presume you take them at night to help combat sleepiness during daytime.
I had Mirtzapine for anxiety not IBS, it helped the anxiety but it makes you very dopey and doesn't alter the IBS symptoms. Many years ago my Dr gave me codeine phosphate telling me I could take as many as I wanted!My advice is get off it as it's addictive and will certainly not cure you. I have the same issues with loperamide so only take it if I really have to. I used to prefer the pink chew tablets but they aren't sold any more. I recently found Enterosgel was great for diarrhoea type IBS and you initially do a 4wk course. It also resolved my GERD issues and I no longer take omeprazole.
Hi I took mirtasapine and like you find they were great for sleeping but nothing else. My depression was worse and I put on loads of weight. Tried it for 6 months and then changed to fluoxetine. Different things work for different people bit personally I won't take them again. The only thing that helps my nausea is a sip of brandy. Not conventional or medical and I mean a sip but the only thing that works for me. And of course sleep . . The irony!!
Anything with ginger in is great for nausea, although be aware Mirtazapine can also make you feel that way, at least until your body gets used to it, best take this medication at bedtime. I would try to cut out wheat, diary, caffeine and fizzy drinks and see if the symptoms improve, you may also find a high dose of vit D helps after a month or two.
My Dr put me on antidepressants for IBS they made me feel nauseous and made my emitophobia, fear of being sick and others being sick, really bad. Put me on a different tablet Fluoxetine which are Prozac, they did not make me feel sick but I was a bit weird it was like my brain was numb. They did make me feel less anxious about my IBS. I am off them now and have been for a while. I am having an anxious time and trying deep breathing, don't really want to go back on them. Codine can become additive so it says in the patient info in the pack. IBS is horrible and I hope you feel a bit better soon x
Mirtazapine didn’t do anything for my IBS – D, although I still take a small amount for sleep. Sertraline, an antidepressant prescribed for anxiety, however did really help my IBS. It’s very strong though.
I took it for probably two years, and then slowly came off it. As I came off it the D Came back with a vengeance
