What to take for IBS constipation?

Advice please. Having tried various herbal aids for IBS without much success. I am thinking of returning to Normacol one dose after lunch and a Laxido before bed. Any thoughts on that policy! Thanks Ian

No thoughts really but I take laxatives 3 times a day. I use rhamnus purshiana (cascara sagrada), a natural laxative.

How successful is it? I have been taking Digestic but it does not seem to agree with me

For me it works quite well. Of course also have to mind what I eat. Have been using it for almost two years now. It works like bisacodyl but it's more gentle for my bowel.

A bit of topic:

finally, after two years of seeing a gastroenterologist, I will have a lactulose breath test because of my constipation/abdominal pain/trapped gas/overflow diarrhea (IBS C). I need to check with the laboratory if I also will be tested for methane producing organisms in my gastrointestinal tract because these could be the cause of all the symptoms. If not I have to ask my gastroenterologist to include testing for methane too.

My mother has been taking senna (tea) for a long time. She's 76 and for her it works well. But also has to mind what she eats.

Must add although my colon doesn't really appreciate when I take bisacodyl it does work somewhat better then cascara sagrada.

Since bisacodyl 5mg is too harsh for my bowel I now try to cut the tablet in half. Not always a succes because the tablet is so small. However with a small sharp knife it can be done.

Since two days I started to cut the tablet in half. Much better appreciated by my bowel :-)

Some real interesting comments here. Just shows nobody’s IBS is the same and people have different ways of coping. It is so reassuring that there are so many of us suffering and the support from this network is great.

Slippery elm plus ( Bio care)

I take laxido and 1 dioctyl once a day. I sometimes increase to 3 x a day.

I take fibrogel. Just a high fiber drink. No drugs.

No real laxatives for me. Instead, I eat a lot of fiber, take fiber supplements (methylcellulose), probiotics (Phillips Colon Care), and a stool softener. If I do have to use one, I go with Miralax

Me again…..I have got Prof Hunters book on IBS there is no doubt I suffer from overload and overflow. So last week I used Large doses of Laxido as recommended and last night started on Normacol. Normal pains this morning from 5.00 a,m loads of wind. No action yet but feel I could go any time. Some days it really gets yo down
