I Hypnotherapy for IBS help.
Peter Whorwell is one of our volunteer experts at The IBS Network, i have contacted him to see what the process is as he was in the process of retiring theibsnetwork.org/about-us/...
I have read his book , Take Control of your IBS which was very good , from that I had a telephone consultation with him which lasted about an hour . Unfortunately, although he is a lovely & knowledgeable man , I didn’t find this as helpful as I thought I would & at £350 /hour quite pricey .
He referred me for NHS funding for the hypnotherapy but I was told it was very unlikely my local authority, would approve it , apparently it varies from area to area .
I’m in Staffordshire.
I am still thinking about having it & paying privately, but this will cost about £1200 , so hence my hesitation.
I am using the Nerva app which is a daily gut pain hypnotherapy course for 6 weeks and am really feeling the benefits. It’s quite expensive, I think it was about £80 but you can trial it for free for two weeks. I heard about it on here.
Hi 301246, I have now done three lots of hypnotherapy. I've had IBS for 35 years. The first time it was just two sessions with a GP friend of my GP. The second was by cd's by Michael Mahoney and most recently the Nerva app, I am currently on day 7 of week 5! This started out okay but it is getting repetitive and as I am not feeling any better at all is not really helping. I have only missed one day as i felt to ill to do it. Also, I try to do it during a good part of the day, not when I am feeling really sh*t. But it isn't helping if I am honest, I will continue with it just to get my money's worth but I will not be paying for anymore so must remember to cancel payment. I would say however that it may help someone new to IBS as the longer you have it the greater the hold it has over you.
I attended his presentation some years ago through the IBS organisation and he is amazing and very approachable. I am sure that the IBS network will help. Go for it.I had IBS for a number of years almost to the point where I was going to have to leave work on health grounds. To cut a long story short my problems were due to Gall stones which has not been diagnosed until I was rushed into hospital in a really bad state one night. I had my gall bladder removed from a specialist hospital as the operation was not straight forward.
Since the operation and on the day I was discharged from hospital in December 2019 I have not had a bout of IBS. Nobody will admit that I may have been wrongly diagnosed.
Hope you get the help that you need.
Patients can be referred to Peter Whorwell on the NHS but it has to be done using a system called 'choose and book'. The GP has to put GI & Liver-functional GI Disorders including IBS-Withington-MFT (putting Professor Whorwell in the free text box). However this is to see him as a Gastroenterologist and not a Hypnotherapist.
Receiving Hypnosis on the NHS for IBS is down to the clinical commissioning group for each area, you would need to check with your GP for this. They will make the decision about funding. Most have to pay private.
Hypnotherapy usually costs around £60 to £90 largely depending on your location and the length of the sessions.
Nice guidelines state “Referral for psychological interventions (cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT], hypnotherapy and/or psychological therapy) should be considered for people with IBS who do not respond to pharmacological treatments after 12 months and who develop a continuing symptom profile (described as refractory IBS).”
Most people have to pay privately for Hypnotherapy , its very rare for the NHS to fund it. hypnotherapists.org.uk/
Hi, I tried hypnotherapy recommended for IBS, it was a course of treatment on several CDs. I tried it about 13 years ago and I am sorry to say it didn’t help me.However, I have found that regular meditation, e.g. mindfulness meditation, does help.
Hi I am the one who has seen Prof Peter Whorewell. I just had to ask my GP to refer me to him and then about 4 weeks later I got an initial appointment. I had to wait about 4 months until I actually got the hypnotherapy from one of his clinical hypnotherapists. He has four hypnotherapists. I didn't know he was thinking of retiring but I'm sure if he does he would of trained someone to take his place and the hypnotherapists would still be carrying on. I wonder if I could somehow get you copies of the hypnotherapy recordings I have. The hypnotherapists give you 12 one hour hypnotherapy sessions at wythenshawe hospital and they give you two recordings to take home with you to treat yourself with as often as you can. Lee
Hi, I have tried three different Hypnotists for Anxiety. They didn’t help at all. I would give this Gentleman a try if it’s on NHS. but I Definately would not pay for it. I have IBS. caused by my anxiety and just cutting out Milk and cutting down on dairy has helped me. Good luck.
Good Luck x
I've had my first phone consultation with the professor which was well over one hour and it was done through the NHS. However I do have to pay for the 12 hypnotherapy sessions.
