Does anyone suffer from occasional bouts of Diarrhea during the night. I note that some sites say not an IBS symptom.

Night Time Diarrhea
hi Rosegp,Thanks for replying . I have had IBS for around 50 years, usually it occurs after food in evening and occasionally over the years I wake up at maybe 3.30 am with a tummy pain and have a D episode, not usually a need for multiple toilet visits. It has happened a few times recently , including last night . Often feel nausea afterwards and not a great feeling next day.
I was just wondering if others out there had anything similar.

Hi will, I too have had IBS for over 50years and last year started doing exactly what you are describing. Waking about 3.30 - 4 and needing to go to the loo with the runs and pain.Got worried about it and saw the doctor had a sigmoidoscopy and nothing showed up apart from the fact my diverticula disease was worse. It was the pain that bothered me the most. Doc prescribed a small dose of amitryptline last thing at night and that has worked a treat especially since I’m an insomniac as well!
I don’t take the amitryptline every night now, just occasionally, and everything is much better.
I hope this has helped you.
I think as you get older ailments change and unfortunately worsen - it’s no fun this getting old lark but at least I’m still here to moan about it!!
Would probably have a word with your doctor about the change in your symptoms.
Take care and if you need to moan I’m here.
How long did it take for the amitriptyline to work after you were prescribed ?
It worked the first night. Have had no problems during the night since. Feel a bit fuzzy first thing in the morning but it is worth it. I take it about half an hour before I go to bed but don’t take it all the time because it seems to have settled things down for me.
Thanks for replying. What dose do you take?
I was prescribed amitriptyline for neck pain for a while and was advised to take it 12 hours before my normal waking up time which helps prevent the fuzzy feeling. It really helped me to sleep better as less need to wake up for bladder emptying. It’s used for a huge variety of ailments it seems.
Hi Pupletara,Thanks for your reply .
Normally , I get quick transit and IBS normally occurs after breakfast or evening meal. Over the years , I have had occasional episodes during the night , so not really a new thing . Just happened a bit more recently with a couple of episodes . I had a dose of antibiotics about 6 weeks ago for a dental problem ( infection) and IBS d has been generally worse since then.
We were away on a short break and I had some soup which I think had cream in it and that had me up most of the night with D.
I did speak to my Doctor , and had stool samples tested , heard nothing back . He recommended to take Imodium . Medical appointments now so difficult to get .
I am taking probiotics to try and put good bacteria back but so far I can’t see any really good results .
Probably a bad flare up period and as you say , as we get older things don’t tend to get better.
Thanks for your reply , I was a little surprised that more people did not reply with night time problems .
I hope your feeling better too.

Hi will. The antibiotics will have done it. You’re doing the right thing taking probiotics to put the good bacteria back.
Know how you feel about doctors- I’m sure mine have gone into hiding!
I’m sure docs would have got back to you if something had shown up in your tests so back to getting on with it ourselves as so many on this site have to do.
Look after yourself and take care.
Hi PurpletraYes I totally agree with you. Seems like Health systems all gone to hell with Covid. Anyway at 74 I dont reallly feel like I want any invasive investigations anymore. As you said we probably just need to do our own thing and try to get on with it best we can.
Thanks again for listening and replying.
To me it always feels funny how some comfort is derived from knowing that your not the only one with a given symptom.

Hi Will1234, yes in the last year or so I’ve had a number of episodes of waking up between 3-4am and having the runs. Diagnosed with IBS over 40 years ago but things definitely changing with age.
Hi FeistyGirl,
Thanks for your reply , I sort of thought it might be a more common problem.
Thank goodness it is more occasional than a regular nightly issue !! It leaves you feeling a bit rotten the next day.- For me , a bit nauseous and like tummy full of gas . Kind of like needing to go but nothing really there. Almost like having had a bug . Probably something tum does not like and transit time.
Agree that things change with age . It used to be every morning with me -now more likely in evening after eating .
Hope your well and managing with this horrible condition.
Best

I have it from time to time, especially when I have had a bout of liquid diarrhea during the day. It happens when I am sleeping and doesn’t wake me up. I find out in the morning! Is there anything to take? Jan
Hi,
I honestly don't know what to suggest . You obviously don't get pains beforehand , so something different going on I think. I hope you can find a solution , possibly should speak to your doctor, although I would think you probably already have done that.
I can say that my daughter has had some similar experiences , although that was something that occurred after having given child birth . I don't think there was much they could do about it . Not a nice situation.
Sorry , not much help.
Best Wishes
Will
It certainly is a symptom of IBS/D! Mine was uncontrollable, I couldn't leave home until my GP prescribed Mebeverine (Colofac). It has changed my life! There are still some foods I can't eat but on the whole I'd say I was 90% better!
Hi Will1234.I just saw your post from 5 months ago ..
I

Night time d happens only when I am in a flare. Not normally. But ibs I have found changes over time. I would still get it checked out by your doctor. Nite Time d Is not a typical ibs symptom.
