Leaky gas

I have been suffering with leaky gas for 5 years now. I am so tired sometimes I feel like giving up in life. I hate when people hold their noses and make fun of me it’s depressing. Does anyone know how to get rid of it for good? I have tried Low FODMAP diet and it works but I lose so much weight and I always end up eating gluten and other problematic foods which constipate me and that’s when my gas become unbearable. Am tired I don’t know what to do anymore.

I’m not sure what to suggest, other than people making fun of you is not acceptable when it’s something you can’t help and something you’re conscious of.

I’m so very sorry to hear that you feel very low right now. It will pass if you get pro active. It sounds like the answer is the FODMAPS diet as you said it works for you. I’m on it too and also lost weight so I have looked up yummy recipes and started to incorporate into my week. There are some great things you can make and not go hungry. Try to get a grip on this new diet regime which seems to work for you and accept your gut can’t take certain foods. Look at new and interesting ideas all online. We are all suffering and often feel so sad and it’s relentless but if you take positive steps you can overcome it. Good luck!

People need to grow up. It would be far better if accepting everyone has a digestive system which has certain functions and everyone was able to talk about these things openly like talking about the weather, rather than using it to make themselves look big and funny at the expense of someone else. Plus there will be people who are afraid to discuss what they are experiencing and may not seek help because others are not understanding, which worst case could have drastic consequences. Being able to open about digestive problems needs to be as easy these days as talking about mental health, which is daily on the news and in the media, which is a good thing.

Are you saying that your gas is smelly? If so, do you eat red meat? I've heard people complain about smelly gas from red meat - maybe because it takes so long to digest.

Have you tried any probiotics like Alflorex probiotic that has been scientifically studied for IBS? I used to be low FODMAP for years. Since taking Alflorex I am more tolerant to a wider range of foods including gluten and FODMAPs. A gut bacterial imbalance can cause your issues, with bad bugs giving these symptoms. A good probiotic helps to shift the balance.

I completely agree with you and sometimes it doesn’t bother me especially when I stay away from any food that cause me constipation like pizza and cheese. Red meat is fine with me as long as I don’t eat too much of it. I have tried few probiotics before but I will definitely give Alflorex a try. I don’t want to eat Low FODMAP for the rest of my life. Am glad it worked for you. Thank you so much for advice I will not make IBS dictate my life.

Well done Annabelle90! That's the fighting spirit. Being low fodmap over an extended period of time can be counterproductive, since your good gut bacteria feeds on fodmaps which helps them to multiple and keep bad bugs at bay.

Have you thought of it being bacterial relAted ? I’ve had this and it was infection of small intestines antibiotics killed it off x

I have had this issue since 2015 and yes I do think it’s SIBO related but I’ve read on so many forums that the antibiotics are bad and don’t work and actually make things worse so that’s why I am worried but if it does work I’ll definitely get a test for it. Could you tell me please how long did you suffer Leaky gas and how long did the antibiotics take to work? Did you ever had bad side effects? Does Leaky gas ever come back? Cheers am so happy it worked for you there’s hope!

Wow am glad it worked for you my GP doesn’t seem understand IBS I was referred to a nutritionist but she told me to follow the Low FODMAP diet but a lot of them don’t seem know this condition well. Could you please tell me the name of the prescription I will ask my GP if it’s possible for me to take it.

in reply to Annabelle90

I had doxycycline but there are other antibiotics they can prescribe I told them it wasn’t my ibs as this was different excess gas was prob fermentation going on bacteria feeding off the carbs . Only side effect after antibiotics was constipation which I was glad to have at the time !!! X

in reply to

High fibre and carbs do ferment in gut so low fodmaps is a good idea don’t give the bacteria a feast !! X

Ok cool thanks I will check with my doctor So do you eat Low FODMAP diet and avoid carbs all the time after the treatment?

in reply to Annabelle90

No I didn’t lol but I do have ibs c and find that eating gas producing foods like cruciferous veg whole grain bread high fibre fruits like pears take forever to digest causing fermentation creates ton of gas. Once the bad bacteria have been killed off a good quality probiotic should repopulate the gut xavoiding high fodmap for a while won’t do any harm x

in reply to Annabelle90

There are herbal microbials that you could try also I’ve read somewhere x

in reply to Annabelle90

Bacterial overgrowth can mimic ibs so doctors just presume it’s ibs either way there’s no need to suffer tell your doc to get it sorted you can’t live like this x

I am 17 and I have had this problem since I was 15. Being at school all day, i am constantly humiliated by this problem and my confidence has tanked. I need fart every 5 seconds and i have leaking gas which is so embarrassing, as even a teacher called me a “disgusting pig” for it, although I had already been to the doctors for tests etc, for them to tell me i have nothing and farting that much is normal. It is destroying my life as I cannot sit comfortably next to anyone who does not really know me without getting stomach cramps and this usually ending in a gas leak with people telling others that they should not sit next to me. How can i live like this? This is awful. I drink peppermint tea in the morning and the doctor gave me peppermint pills that seem to have done nothing. I want to sort this out as I should be enjoying my life as a teenager; however, i have to suffer with this everyday.
