IBS and Gluten

Hi Everyone. Just browsing Dr Google and came across an article looking at IBS and gluten intolerance.

Have IBS for some years now but has become progressively painful and although I'm not Coeliac I would say I have many symptoms of gluten intolerance. Is there a link ? Looking to try a Gluten free diet.

Would be very appreciative to receive your inputs and experiences regarding this subject.

Stay well.

Hi,

Last summer was a time when my IBS was the worst it has ever been so I finally started looking at the FODMAP diet. When doing so I noticed that most, if not all, gluten free food is low GI index. So, I significantly cut down on my gluten intake and it has had a massively positive effect on me! Whilst not being actually gluten intolerant, according to an intolerance test, I can tolerate some gluten. But there appears to be a point that having too much can set my IBS off. So I have to be very careful in what I eat. If I keep my gluten intake levels low then my IBS is very good. I certainly feel more in control of my IBS, and feel as though I can easily get from A to B.

I do get the odd bizarre flare-up for no apparent reason but this appears to be normal, from what I read.

But saying all this, this is just what happens to me. Everyone is different. So this might not work for you. You just have to try different things to see what does and doesn't work.

Good luck!

Hi Thank you for your reply. I'll certainly take a more in depth look at the FodMap foods/diet. I have already excluded a large number of the well documented irritant foods/drinks so the next step is to try low Gluten Foods.

Don't actually need to loose weight , IBS and GERD has already done that for me. Bowels are fairly normal now although I have had major flare ups of both D and C during the past 5 yrs . I have other health complications such as GERD , Silent Reflux and heart issues , so it's difficult to manage them all and keep the pain to a acceptable level.

Once again thank you so much. Hope all goes well with you.

Stay well

Hi. I have other problems too so I know how hard it can be to get the right diet for you. I have acid reflux problems which I have been taking tablets for, for a very long time. I also suffer with Hypoglycaemia too and a weak bladder. So I have to steer clear of various foods and drinks for all that. Some foods that are good for one thing are not good for another, so it majorly restricts what you can eat and drink. I drew up a spreadsheet of all the food and drink you can have for each condition, and then knocked them off if they weren't allowed for another. That was very helpful.

As Pthom50 has said, I also have Lactose free milk too. I also suffer with stress and anxiety so I am always trying to keep calm otherwise my IBS goes crazy.

Hope you get yourself sorted soon. Good luck.

Hi...I'm not coeliac either but have found gluten free products have helped a lot. I also use lactose free milk. They (for me anyway) seem to be easier on the system. Am also doing relaxation (breathing, meditation etc) as I know that stress makes IBS so much worse. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Ps I find Genius products (especially bread) are good. I also more or less follow low fodmap as am mostly IBSD.

Hi Thank you for your reply. I'll certainly take a more in depth look at the FodMap foods/diet and your recommendations.

You are so right about stress , I have anxiety and the Covid situation does not help for any of us.

Once again thank you so much. Hope all goes well with you.

Yep..nothing like IBS to trim you down! I'm 2 stone lighter than 6 months ago when all this started. Try to cut down on sugar intake as well but no sweeteners...they are really bad for my IBS anyway. Good luck.

Yes, it's the fructans in grains rather than the gluten, the low fodmap would be great for this download monash fodmap app :)

Hi Thank you for your reply. Never really give Fructans a thought. Shall have to stop using honey to sweeten the porridge and take a more in depth look at the grains/FODMAPS.

Take care.
