Hey!

Any fellow vegans here? As much as I love the vegan lifestyle, living mainly off fruit, veggies, beans, grains and pulses can make me so gassy and bloated! I'm not gonna lie, my IBS has improved SO much since eliminating dairy (my IBS was very badly triggered by a milk allergy/lactose intolerance that caused days of painful stomach spasms, troublesome bowels and vomiting) but I'm still fighting the bloat, gas and constipation. I have PCOS so I struggle with water retention and have already cut the sugar, soy and gluten to help with other symptoms. I know peppermint tea works a charm to relieve bloated and gassy tummies but I'd rather find a prevention! I've started running and have started to practice yoga again so I am hopefully moving enough but I wondered if anyone had a similar thing or some advice!

Hey there,

I am vegetarian and now mostly vegan. That is awesome that eliminating dairy has improved your symptoms!

That's great! 😊 And yes, cutting out dairy was the best decision I've made! I had suffered with random bouts of stomach pains and sickness from an early age and I haven't experienced them once since switching to plant based milk years ago, before even going vegan! How are your IBS symptoms with a meat-free lifestyle? 🤗

I have very similar issues to you, I am vegetarian (for 32 years) & have chronic dairy intolerance.

Really sorry can't offer much advise. Watching your post with interest!

If you take iron supplements they can cause bloating, but I think the pulses are the cause of my 'gas' problem!

I have even considered eating meat... although after such a long time maybe that would cause other problems???

Hi!

How have your symptoms changed since cutting dairy? 😊 It was the best decision I made! I was raised veggie and naively chose to start eating meat when I was 16. Last year at 21 I became vegetarian again and later decided to go vegan which was easy cus I'd cut dairy! I personally found meat to make my problems worse and I feel much better since eliminating it. It's just beating the bloated, gassy, constipated belly! As well as my chickpea obsession it may be the constant mix of lots of veggies each day. Maybe sticking to just a few per meal accompanied by some healthy fats will help? I often include a variety each time but maybe that's too much for me. Do you do the same? It's hard as the plant based diet can be like IBS fuel! Haha 🙈 x

Lfuzz have you look in the freezer cabinets in the supermarkets lately ,lots of delicious foods now ,Linda McCartney has pies,sausage rolls,,all no meat, there's other stuff like spring onion and cheese burgers, cauliflower cheese bakes, etc, not eating properly makes you tired and lethargic ,give it a go ,

Yes, what a time to be vegan! It's heaven. However, I have to keep an eye on soy and gluten because of my PCOS and unfortunately most vegan alternatives are made up of these things! I'm trying to find a good balance 😊

I had undiagnosed IBS for 15-20 years. My brother has Khrone's syndrome.

Started the Fodmaps diet strictly in 2014 and followed it strictly for a year. This eliminated the digestive pain. Have permanently eliminated wheat and barley products, lactose except Swiss cheese or English cheddar or French emmental cheeses (all the same type of cheese). Have problems with lots of vegetables and fruit. Thanks to Fodmaps diet I worked out which ones were causing problems. Lots of them. Eliminated all the groups of food that caused problems. This is very restrictive but I felt so much better it was worth it.

I'm a non-strict vegetarian as I have intestinal absorption problems and so can't get enough iron with a stric vegetarian diet. I eat poultry liver on week 1 and 2 eggs on week 2 to get enough iron in my diet. And spiruline powder for vegan iron (this is not enough as spiruline is not as easily assimilated as poultry or rabbit liver.

Due to several very very stressful situations as I don't live in my native country, I developped chronic tirednesss and had basocell carcinoma on my nose twice due to stress and a weak immune system. The 2 operations to remove the cancers knocked me over and I've never recovered from the tiredness. Not sure if it was the length of the operations or the chemicals used.

For my chronic tiredness my immunologist put me on probiotics, to improve intestinal flora, vitamin supplements for the immune system and homeopathy for past problems with candida/cystitis and infections.

Probiotics were what was missing from my Fodmaps diet.

here is only one probiotic I've found so far in France compatible with the Fodmaps diet: Lactophar (made by Longevie, a Belgium company). Done wonders for my intestinal flora.

The immunologist also put me on vitamin supplements for my immune system (did me wonders for my hair and skin). I converted his chemical vitamin supplements into natural vitamin supplements.

He also eliminated all foods containing yeast and I have to eat very fresh food to avoid creating yeast fermentation (gas) in the intestines.

He also eliminated sugar except stevia from my diet. The only sugar I tolerate is from 125ml/day fresh fruit juice (orange or pineapple juice. I put it on my oats flake cereals for breakfast (oats help the constipation). I don't eat anything with stevia in it although I could.

I've been on the immunologist's part of my diet for 8 months now and still trying to find the right balance for the yeast fermentation problems (can't always eat super fresh food).

My luxury foods are real filtered coffee (no instant coffee allowed any more - Fodmaps diet) and real 90% chocolate (otherwise too much sugar).

The prognosis for chronic tiredness is not good. However I feel so much better generally and rarely have digestive pain problems anymore.

Exercise and stress management: I walk 20 minutes a day, meditate 20-40 minutes a day and do yoga every morning for 10-20 minutes at least.

I now only work part time so I can cope with the tiredness. No it's no longer due to food.

It's a chronic illness!!!

Not sure I will be cured of my chronic tiredness. But at least I've tried everything I can and I don't suffer from digestive pain anymore except if I use the wrong probiotics or eat out at friends and eat something I shouldn't (eg onion or garlic).

Hi yes I'm vegan also :) and I highly recommend taking a vegan probiotic such as optibac( extra strength worked for me) give them a good eight weeks to work. Good luck xx
