Colonoscopy prep

Im finally being referred to the gastro doc after a miserable 10 months of extreme symptoms following a Flucloaxillin reaction but a total of 16 months suffering mainly from IBS D*. My doc who referred me mentioned potential nutritionalist or a colonoscopy. Im scared the prep will send my guts haywire for months as two tiny doses of antibiotics I took sent me insane up until this day. Can someone talk me through the procedure?

Hi there I did have d for a while after the prep but I had it a few times in a short time ! The moviprep I had a reaction to after the first hug so didn’t take any more but got all the effects! Then two weeks later they gave me picolax ,much better, then couldn’t compete the colonoscopy so then took something beginning with g. For a colongraphy, which shouldn’t have had that effect hahah but it did because I was still suffering from previous stuff ! So after all that I guess it took around 2 weeks to bung up

Hi I had a colonoscopy last year. A few days before you take the prep you get a list of foods you can/can’t eat. Basically nothing with too much fibre in, eg you have white bread not whole meal. Then depending on the time of your procedure depends on what time you start the prep. Mine was an afternoon so the day before I could have breakfast and a snack before midday then at 2.00pm I had to start the prep. If yours is in the morning you may have to start the prep early one morning then the 2nd lot in the afternoon ready for the next day. You mix the first packet of moviprep with 1 litre of water and over the next 1-2 hours drink it. I thought it tasted a bit like a sour sherbet or something. The first few glasses I drank as it was, the rest I mixed with some squash (not blackcurrant but orange is ok). Don’t gulp it as you may be sick. Some people use a straw. I just took a mouthful every few mins. I think i went to the toilet within the first hour and then a couple of more times that evening. I managed to sleep midnight until 6am when I had to get up to start the second litre. Again I put squash with mine and I found this one a little harder so I actually held my nose with each mouthful. I’m lucky as I drink lots of water anyway so didn’t find it too hard to get through. I had my procedure at 1.30. The nurses were lovely and the doctor was too. It felt like something was coming but they said there was nothing in my bowel and I could see on screen there wasn’t. It’s just a weird sensation! I didn’t have sedation or gas and air but I do have a high pain threshold and I know plenty of people that have something. I had a biopsy taken too. Luckily all clear - I was only being checked as I have bile acid malabsorption and they wanted to check nothing else was wrong like microscopic colitis or something. As you can imagine I was starving so we stopped for food on way home. I would say be careful for the next 24 hours or so with what you eat as it may go through you, but after that it was fine. I hope that explained it for you. Good luck.

Last time I did colonoscopy prep I was so sick I would have rather died. I have not had one since. I was supposed to have another 3 years ago..Maybe I will have another in a few months.. I have an appointment with a doctor who actually deals with IBS.. I have found noooo other doctor. Hope this one works out. I know you should do it. They found 2 polyps in my bowel and removed them last time. Work up the courage and have it done!!
