IBS D and cycling

Hi,

I have had IBS D for about 5 years caused by H-Pylori bug. I've got some time on my hands at the moment lol so have been indoor cycling 4 or 5 times a week for 3 months now for anywhere from half hour to an hour.

It's occurred to me that apart from a Xmas flare up that my IBS is a lot better i.e. no real pains and I can take reduced medication. Anyone know why this is?

Matt

If you have time on your hands, presumably this means you are less stressed? Were you stressed before you had time on your hands? Stress and IBS can go hand in hand. Exercise always helps - reduces stress, produces endorphins and helps with pain. There are studies that show that exercise helps your microbiome.

I don't think so. As I work on a contract basis then I have periods out of work and the pain was more before. I was so in pain for at least two years after getting rid of the H Pylori bug. It's gradually got less with the passage of time but exercise appears to make a huge difference. Perhaps it's the jigging around of my belly on the bike lol!

I worked on a contract basis in a very stressful job and my intestinal pain gradually became more and more chronic despite being on a low fodmap diet and taking regular exercise. I have IBS-C and I take Linaclotide which has helped with the pain considerably. Glad that something is working for you.

I'll let it run for a few more months to see if it's true. I may get a flare up tomorrow and then be completely wrong!

Haha. Sods law. I've made declarations on this Forum before and come a cropper the next day :-). Let's hope not in your case.

Also doing so much better since having time on hands. Get flare ups near period but generally can eat most things and not have bad gas anymore. Good for you

Exercise, relaxing, and knowing there is an available toilet nearby, are absolutely three terrific bonuses for promoting the good feelings and making any pains and yuck feelings drain away. Good luck, well done and carry on.
