Hi all,

First time here.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever undertook hypnotherapy as a way of preventing ibs-d?

I have had ibs-d for 18 months now and it is taking control of my life.. I have tried diets, fodmaps, antispasmodics, you name it i've tried it. I also suffer from quite severe anxiety which i had control over until the severe bouts of ibs-d started to kick in. As a 26 year old girl with an 8yr old son you can imagine how much of a toll it's taking on my life and my sons life. I feel like i can't leave my house, I feel as though i'm on house arrest.. Any advice/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks guys

Hi, yes I've tried it and it seems to have worked. I have been seeing a hypnotherapist in Sheffield who does hypnotherapy specifically for IBS. I am also taking a low dose Amytriptiline to relax me at night. I wish you well and hope you can find someone to help.

Hi what exactly happens when u are there please

Hi there,

I have had hypnotherapy to help me with chemical intolerance (to paint, perfume, toilet and car fresheners) that I developed during IBS. It improved my symptoms about 50%, which was of significant help to me. I had 4 sessions to get that result.

Hypnotherapy helps you and the therapist access the subconscious mind, and help reprogramme automatic reactions to a situation. You sit in a chair and are taken into a relaxed state, and try to get back to the origin of that automatism, replacing it with a more positive or useful reaction. I was conscious the whole time and remember everything that was said by myself and the therapist during the session.

If you know that your diarrhoea and/or anxiety is a reaction to a stressful experience in the past (or in the present but via a past trigger), this could be worth trying.

Do get someone recommended to you by your doctor. Having confidence in the person is key to getting results. I would recommend going and seeing a woman as you will be more relaxed and therefore more likely to accept being hypnotised.

Hope this helps,

Alison

Hi

I have not tried it but would like to. So far counselling, meditation and self help books seem to help. Would also like to try acupuncture but so expensive! X
