Lactase tablets?

Morning all,

What would happen if I took a lactase tablet but did not consume any lactose. Would there automatically be any side effects? Can you take too much lactase? How much is too much?

I'm exploring the option of taking a lactase tablet as a preventative measure as I have been unable to find out if a meal has any milk ingredients.

I have an upcoming flight and yes I can order a lactose free meal, however these generally consist of high fibre ingredients which my body cannot process (bran, beans, pulses, soy milk).

I've search the internet and have been struggling to find an answer 🤔

Thank you.

The best people to ask about drugs are the pharmacists who have studied them and dispense them, that is their job. Enjoy your holiday and flight.

No problem. An enzyme is protein catalyst, it is not destroyed by doing its job, so whether you have lactose or not makes no difference. It will get digested like other proteins eventually.

Thank you for replying.

I was worried in case it would give me side effects if I hadn't consumed anything with lactose.

I was more concerned that it would cause 'D'... In have enough of that to deal with!

No worries. I have also taken them as a preventative when you know you are eating out. However, it is better to take them with the meal rather than beforehand.

Great, one final question?

Can I just walk into my local chemist and ask for them?

I've seen them on Holland & Barrett website but they don't have very good reviews.

There are 100's when I do an internet search and I've never been keen on ordering medication online!

I think I got mine from Nature's Best. But i found for me was better to use a multi-enzyme which helps you to digest all food groups. Lifeplan do a good one, or you can get others in Holland and Barrett.

I get mine from Holland and Barrett, I use them regularly when out for the day, they are a god send, they are a bit expensive but they have a buy one get another for a penny offer every so often, good luck😁

I'm a bit late, but I wanted to say that I've been taking lactase pills for the last 10 years. They're super well known in Germany where I grew up and therefore are easily available. If in doubt, it's best to speak to a pharmacist, but from what I have read, all the different manufacturers I have ever taken say on the packaging or website that any surplus lactase in your body will just be excreted naturally as it is an enzyme produced by your body.

Now that I live in the UK I take the one's from this new brand called Lea Gogo and they're really great for me! They also have some blogs about lactose intolerance to get some information: leagogo.com
