Hi All, I joined IBS Network a few weeks ago having been told by a locum dr I had IBS (on a Friday).
Fast forward almost a week and I’m recovering in hospital after surgery because of diverticulitis. I had an 8cm abcess in my lower bowel and even though I went to ER, seen a locum dr this almost cost me my life because I was almost went into sepsis shock.
Please, please if you are having very bad abdominal pain, constipation bloated please get to your dr’s and insist on a blood test to start because that will show infection. When this all started (almost 3 weeks) a simple course of antibiotics would have likely sorted this but instead I was told it was IBS and in truth it almost cost me my life.
I am just so thankful my own dr realised that something really wasn’t right and referred me to the hospital the same day.
Thank you very much, I certainly feel an awful lot better. I won’t be myself for sometime and everything will take time to work correctly again after being poked etc lol I’m just looking forward to getting home and seeing my kids and wife in truth. Thank you so much for your kinds thoughts.
I suffered for 6 months same as you, they kept saying it was IBS I ended up in hospital with an abcess in my cecum. I was so ill I lost so much weight. The pain was unbearable always at its worst late at night through to early morning. I was admitted to hospital and treated with intravenous antibiotics for 2 weeks discharged told to rest recover then operated on 1 month later. My bowel has never fully recovered I have flare ups !!!!! I have never come across anyone who has gone through this, I knew of a young man age 23 who died of the condition. It so easily misdiagnosed. My advice to anyone is keep going to gp every day if you have to, if they won't listen ring for ambulance then you will get seen asap. Please do not leave it like I did. I do hope you make a speedy recovery.
