FREE FROM IBS

A few years ago I was diagnosed with IBS after a colonoscopy. I thought I was doomed. However, a few weeks later, a friend contacted me and told me of a recipe which could help. At first I was sceptical, but heigh ho, I'd have tried anything. The recipe is simple: 2 oz medium oats, 2 oz pinhead (steel cut in USA) oats, one pint of cold water. Mix, bring to the boil for no more than couple of minutes, then remove from the stove. Leave for 8 hours or overnight, then refrigerate. Eat a portion for breakfast with whatever you like, milk, jam, honey etc. I'm now gluten and lactose free, but can buy milk and oats which are, too. After 4 days, the IBS was gone. I have a friend in London who had IBS for 7 years, so I visited with the oats, made up a batch and she also was free after just over a week. I was told that oats are a calming influence on the electrical impulses in the gut, although that's all I know. I'm not claiming this as a miracle cure, but it worked for me. The recipe is harmless and nutritious and if it doesn't work for you, no harm done. I hope you give it a try. Gerladine

It is wonderful your IBS has gone. You must be so happy. I know oats are one of the safe foods but they give me stomach cramps.

Have you tried gluten free oats? It could be that the stomach cramps are because of gluten, my symptoms of being gluten intolerant were bloating, stomach cramps, feeling very nauseous and cold sweats. The same happens with lactose intolerance. Every best wish, Gerladine

Thank you for the reply. I am gluten intolerant so the oats were gluten free. It is odd they still effected me.

Good news!

The trouble with IBS is that different food (or should that be FODMAP's) affect people very differently

Oats contain gluten which is inflammatory to many people and non celiac gluten sensitivity is now being considered a real condition in some quarters. I was particularly effected by gluten during my worst periods of IBS & SIBO. Some oats are reasonably high in Fructans too.

My point is, not to thwart your positivity, but to caution what's good for the goose isn't necessarily palatable for the gander! 😊

Still great news, I know how amazing it is to be IBS free...me too!

I know full well that oats contain gluten, which is why I use gluten free oats, both porridge and pinhead oats. I was diagnosed as being gluten intolerant years ago and have used gluten free oats since then, without a recurrence of any of the symptoms. Both types of gluten free oats are freely available at Morrisons.

There's something in oats called 'Avenin' which causes a reaction in some people not only caeliacs. I don't have caeliac disease but I find oats give me terrible bloating and discomfort. However, I know they're good for ibs c so I may try your recipe - thank you. It's always good to hear of things that work.

I'm so pleased for you Gerladine , it's great to hear a good news story 😀
