PPI Rebound

I took Pantoprazole 40mg for 1 month. I stopped taking it almost 2 weeks ago and have been experiencing some burning in my chest along with indigestion.

How long do the rebound effects usually last?

Can be several month. What I found that helped me was taking digestive enzymes with large meals and Zantac as needed. Pre and probiotics also. I live in the US and the easiest on my gut for enzymes and probiotics is a brand called Pure Encapsualtions.

Good Luck! Based on recent studies it seems a good idea to go off.

May I ask why you have stopped taking Pantoprazole?

Mostly the side effects. I also didn’t want to take it long term anyway

Are you not worried that your symptoms will start up again??? Did the side effects outweigh the benefits?? I guessing they did.

I’m only intrigued as I have been on pantoprazole for 3 weeks now. For the past week I have felt the best I have for ages.

Can you tell me why you were on pantoprazole in the first place & what the side effects were you suffered. If you’d rather not discuss then I understand!!

I never had the burning sensation before taking the medication. I think i had what is called “silent reflux” because i never had any symptoms (as far as acid-related) yet my endoscopy showed inflammation. I had the endoscopy because of a shaking sensation in my chest along with some other symptoms. My doctor wanted me to be on the Pantoprazole for 3 months to let my stomach and esophagus heal, but i didn’t feel well on the medication. I was nauseous and not able to eat very much which made me feel even worse/weak. I also know that there are longterm side effects to these medications and i was only planning on taking it short term. I felt better once I got off as far as being able to eat again. The burning i found out was the rebound effect of getting of it. That is great that it has helped you! I guess medications just affect people differently

Thank you for your reply. I have had a problem whereas sometimes when I eat it’s like a plug in my oesophagus & nothing will go down & I have to run to the loo & bring my food back up. People have said ‘have a drink’ but that literally just sits aswell & everything comes back up. I used to get this every few months but since December it has been much worse & has become a daily occurrence. My gp put me on lansoprazole but nothing changed. As I said in my previous post I am now 3 weeks into pantoprazole and for the past week I haven’t had a recurrence on my ‘choking’. I’m going for a barium swallow on Tuesday to see if they can find an answer for me. Like you, I don’t particularly feel comfortable being on these drugs for a long period of time!! I feel so much better though right now that I think I will panic if I’m taken off them.

I really appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on your condition.
