Mixing PPI and SSRI?

Hi all, I've had a few questions recently and now have another one: has anybody mixed both omeprazole and sertraline and, if so, did you experience any side effects?

I ask as I started sertraline 4 days ago, after 3 days I discovered I was shivery, had shakes and was clenching my jaw a lot. As of this morning, I noticed there was a great 'pause' following ectopic heartbeats.

I should point out, I was ablated for afib 2 years ago too, so my heart is prone to the odd irregular beat but it's increased recently and even more so since starting sertraline.

As I'd only been on the sertraline for 3 days, I chose not to take one today, as I couldn't tolerate another night like that. Right now, it's almost 10pm and I am not having palpitations as such - hr 75 - but my heart is pounding away. Can feel it in my back!

I hadn't even considered checking the interactions, as I didn't think two drugs like this could have such a strong crossover. Not only that, but my GP didn't mention anything.

I've found this on Drugs.com - So via Drugs.com (drugs.com/drug-interactions..., it appears that there is a very real interaction between other types of drugs for acid reflux and SSRIs, although the dose here is 400mg of Cimetidine and I'm only on 20mg daily of omeprazole and 50mg sertraline.

Any thoughts? I'm trying to ween myself off omeprazole anyway, was planning to move on to ranitidine as an alternative.

Hi Dave.🤗

Yes I'm on both the last year, but I'm on the 40mg of omeprazole. An the 50mg Sertraline . I'm on it for PTSD and my FMS an M.E . I also have a heart condition called microvascular Angina. I'm in heart medication and when I started on the Sertraline like you I wanted to chuck it in because I was experiencing similar side effects. I was informed by my cardiologist that Sertraline can with some people cause side effects like ours if we have a heart condition. So I was kept on the 50mg and they changed my omeprazole 40mg to Gertec 20mg twice a day and to be honest the side effects past after 8 days. Once in a blue moon I might get like a butterfly trying to get out my chest. It last for a few seconds and passes. It doesn't cause a angina attack. The angina dosent need a cause it just happens itself 🤣😂 . Maybe you could ring your doctor or pharmacist and let them know what's happening with you and they can then advice you. Because you can't really stop medication like Sertraline abruptly it has to be done gradually , I don't know if that's the same with your situation of being on them just a few days. I hope this helps answer your question and gives you a bit of help 🤗😀 be well and keep strong 🤗

Hi Dave, that doesn’t sound good at all! I am currently on 50mg of Sertraline daily and take 2 ranitidine tablets morning and night and haven’t had any of the side affects you’ve said about. I’d definitely speak to your doctor and see if that suits you better, it did take about 2 weeks to see it work!

To be honest with you my plan is to ease off the omeprazole and start on ranitidine. I've read there's an interaction there too, but can only give it a try. I need something, as I can't really afford to be off work too much longer while I find out what is going on with my other health issues!

Hi I’ve taken 35mg amitriptyline SSRI for 20years plus. Also taking 20mg omprezole I’ve never had a problem with both interacting. I think the problem you’re getting with SSRI is just getting use to it. I personally would carry on as I could never go back without SSRI as they made my life so much better. Tried coming off them but always go back to old IBS problems. Good luck
