Can Lansoprazole cause more harm than good if you have IBS? Is it better to be on them or off if you have suspected Gord?

Can Lansoprazole cause more harm than good if you have IBS? I was advised that this can cause upset stomach.

Better to be on than off? Not being on Lansoprazole could the gord get worse and cause more problems? I am only 40.

Hi there,

Can only say from my own experience that they caused my ibs d to be worse. I took them for 10 years for heartburn related reasons. I came off them back in September and instead of daily runs I only get it if I eat a trigger food. I’d say I saw an 80 to 90% improvement in the ibs d.

Down side is I’m now trying to sort my horrendous heartburn out!

But I know what I’d prefer - at least I can go to work or on holiday knowing I’m not going to need to run to loo all the time!!

Give them a try - my husband has just started to take them and never has heartburn anymore and none of the side effects like me.

Good luck!!

Hi,

I think it depends on the individual. I'm on omoprazole, and can't say that it's made my IBS any worse. My gastric reflux has been so much better, I can go to sleep at night without being sick all the time, and the constant pain at the top of my stomach is almost non-existant. I think by the sounds of what others have said you really have to see how you are both on and off the medication before you can make any decision. Hope this helps!

I found omeprazol and lansoprazole if taken regularly every day , as course ,caused sudden bouts of D , often out of the blue. If taken occasionally no problem.

After discussion with GP , it seems clear that these meds can cause D. I was then prescribed Rinitidine tabs and problem resolved.

I am not sure of the differences in what the meds do but Rinitidine resolved the acid pain and ibs issues returned to normal .

Might be worth discussion with Doc.

Everyone's body works differently? I have been on Lansaprazole for acid reflux for 15+ years. Initially it was 30mg continuously each day, but I got wary of the damage it could do to my bones? I've gradually weaned off them and use them only when absolutely necessary. I never related the use of them with flare up s of IBS. I do know that if my hiatal hernia or acid reflux play up, within days I get pain, etc of IBS, so my methods are to use lansaprazole when I feel upper discomfort? I make Kombucha tea and kefir yogurt and cheese for good pre and probiotics too. Hope this info helps.

Lansoprazole gets rid of stomach acid. Low stomach acid is a big factor in all digestive issues. Stomach acid is required to absorb B12. It also triggers the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to neutralise acidic chyme going from the stomach to to gut. If this doesn’t happen because of low stomach acid, urine and stools are acidic and causes burning. It also causes pressure in the gut which pushes the partly digested food up the esophogus, causing reflux and heart burn.

So yes lansoprazole makes IBS worse.
