Hi Sammy987 , I can't help you out with a nutritionists but over the 8 months I been using apps via my phone to help me . the free one i got from play store was Fodmap helper which was good but i just got is Monash uni low Fodmap it cost a 5 but It is good. I will be looking at the nutritionists route if this doesn't work but finding the right one at least your doctor getting you a appointment , mine just gave me a blank stare .good luck
Hi, I found my info online as my doctors just blank me, I have had IBS fo 22yrs now and have finely got relief using fodmap, it was hard at first for the elimination faze but I am am now no longer afraid to go out or be with other people because of my symptoms. There is loads of free info online, just takes some working out to suit yourself.
I am not a nutrionalist but i have seen a nhs one and my friend is one.
I was told by both when my ibs c put me in hospital after not GOING for over week to start eliminating.
First was gluten! As soon as i stopped with 5-7 days i felt better. Then i went dairy which i think gluten was main culprit but im not great with dairy anyway so i though WHY NOT? I also do not eat any onions garlic brocoli or cauliflower and spices.
I also take probiotics and digestive enzymes for a healthy gut bacteria. Which made huge difference , i now go every day!!
I cried when i was told , honestly i thought “ omg what am i goin to eat” coz all the food i ate was spicey and i love bread and milk chocolate but it is amazing how ur tastes change.
I used to have really bad skin, pssoarisis ( cant spell lol) but as soon as i stopped the gluten my skin just literally stopped! Ive not had it since!
So i must of had quite a severe case of intolerance.
Ive noticed difference in every thing really, my periods, my skin, hair , nails and my weight ... i have lost 2 stone in 8 months. It just fell of me and i was slimish to start with but now im skinny! Thats only thing. I cannot put on weight coz i eat so clean.... i miss my boobs lol
Thanks so much for all your responses to me. Unfortunately for me tho I can't afford to loose weight. Not at the moment anyway. I'm in full recovery of an eating disorder. Since age of 14 I have always struggled with my weight now being 30 and fully committed to getting better I'm in a really good place mentally. Unfortunately due to digestive issues (caused by restriction) I'm now having to pay for the years I've damaged my body. But rather be the old selfish me and trefusing to eat..I want to start listening to my body and give it really nutritious food that is high in fat full of flavour and nutrients so I can start a family with my amazing supportive husband. I'm getting some online professional Advise and already starting to notice a difference. I've cut out mainly gluten and replaced it with other grains. It's interesting you say about periods.. due to my weight I lost mine but I've been at a good weight for over a year now and nine are still very light and unpredictable. I've had all the tests and there is nothing to stop me having children or nensyual periods so now I'm wondering if digestion and absorption of nutrients could be preventing the regularity.... what do u mean when u say your periods are alot better??? I know woman who have also been in the same position as me.. for even longer periods of time and there cycles are back to normal..xx
I just meant that i have other issues. I have endo and fibromyalgia so my periods have always been HORRIFIC but now ive realised alot of my probs can b controled with gluten and dairy free plus i follow a non imflammatory diet so my periods are a little easier to handle now
Hi Sammy,
I'm not a nutritionist - but I have recovered form chronic IBS. If I had waited for the NHS I would still have it, and not enjoying the life I now have. We have a health system that is there for us when we have car crashes, need emergency operations. But it can't do it all.
IBS is not it's priority. Although it is ours.
My advice is not to wait for the NHS. But to invest in your health. Any free info out there will not be tailored to your specific challenges and needs. Maybe the smartest thing you could do today is invest some time and money in your health, with a professional who has had IBS.
The Canadian nutritionist Stephanie Clairmont has had IBS and is doing some great work on the subject. Maybe someone else on the forum knows of someone in the UK.
I'd recommend looking at British Dietetic Association website for some good starting information, keeping a food (and stress!) diary to at least make a start with identifying any triggers and have a look at the work Dr Megan Rossi is doing on gut health (she's also on Insta as @thegutdoctor) and The Gut Stuff.
I am a nutritionist and I specialise in gut issues. IBS is a horrible thing (I used to have it), but it can be helped a lot. For some it is because of certain foods (but I'd be careful cutting out foods before you're really sure). Either keep a food diary and try and see when you have problems. Many people's digestion issues are caused by a lack of stomach acid, so many of my clients issues get better when we start fixing this. We're all different though, so what works for some doesn't work for other's. I have an offer on at the moment or I have a free 15 minute call. I also have a Facebook group called 'Gut Guru's' with tips and chat about all of these issues.
