Stupid question - fizzy water...

Hello all. I am a lover of fizzy/sparkling water and I have IBS-D. I know (I really do know) that fizzy drinks make IBS worse BUT when you read that advice; is it fizzy drinks with added sweetners and sugar (Lilt, Tango, Coca Cola, etc) or do you think it includes sparkling water? I want you to say no - but I have a feeling my suspicions are correct and my beloved sparkling water will have to be no more....... 💔

Fizzy drinks can effect ibs because of sweeteners and caffeine so plain fizzy water should be fine. I can only have certain fizzy drinks and deffo not sugar free as the sweeteners are murder on my system. Trial and error is the key with ibs unfortunately.

Thanks. I have never noticed a major reaction to fizzy water but I imagine the bubbles aren’t helping! X

The bubbles will probably cause wind or bloating but as an ibs sufferer you will learn, what cause what symptoms and how to handle the symptoms as they arise. You could try stirring the water or putting it in a warmish glass to reduce the bubbles if they are troublsome. I love tonic water and have to reduce the bubbles before i drink it. Fizzy drinks arn't as bubbly because of all the sugars and flavours. If its just plain fizzy water you prefer try a soda stream, you can have the water as fizzy as you like then.

I only drink fizzy water, unless I drink 100% cocoa in boiled water.

I feel the carbon dioxide has a positive effect on the bacteria in my gut, and so long as I keep to my lactose and gluten free diet, I do not get the pain and bloating I used to get. I also do not drink alcohol. Before I used to suffer terribly with bloating, acid reflux, D and C.

So I would recommend Fizzy water!

Awwww I like you. Hee hee. I have been doing Go Sober for October - today is day 27 - it has made ZERO difference (I am secretly pleased because I can keep drinking it now! In moderation. Lol).

it depends on the person if it causes problems as were all different. If you feel fizzy water is a problem cut it out for a while and then reintroduce it and if it is causing problems then cut it out.

Thanks! I just love it but I am giving it a rest for a while to see what happens. I guess my query really was; does this come under the category of a “fizzy drink” as per the definitions for Low FODMAP?! 🤷🏻‍♀️
