Im often woken during the night with colicky bowel pain. It starts in my bowel when im asleep so i get up to use the toilet. The pain get worse to the point im sweating then theres a bubbly/watety sound on the left side of my abdomen (under ribs next to stomach) then i have diarreah. Once the pain has completely stopped (about 20 to 30 minutes) and so has the diarreah i feel drained and achy in my bowel but usually go back to sleep. This used to happen once in a blue moon but so far this year its happened about 6/7 times. I had an ultrasound on my gall bladder last year and all was fine (no pain on right side) i was diagnosed with ibs age 14, im now 39 and symptoms have changed dramatically over the years. Anyone else have similar symptoms or advice?

Colicky pain during the night.
I get a similar thing, it can get quite painful. what I have noticed is before I get one of those 'episodes' my tummy is quite pronounced and I can feel uncomfortable in bed. I did go and see the doc, he has given me some medication to have before I eat to stop the bowel cramping. Only started them yesterday and had an episode last night so the jury is out on the medication at the moment.
I take anti spasmodics for cramping but they don't work on this type of pain at all.
Sorry I can't help, I've not experienced this with my IBS. I hope you find something that works for you. In the meantime, I expect you have looked at your diet etc on what you can and cannot eat.
Best of luck
Hi I too have a similar problem for the last 1 year and the doctors say that it's all IBS but I am not convinced.symptoms slightly improved after I started taking an Ayurvedic medication called R compound after a gynaecological surgery.i am awaiting another scan.
YES Chubbylover78!! I've had the same experience - many times. It wakes me right out of sleep. It feels like my intestines are twisted and I have to kneed the area with my hand and the pain is so intense. I am not constipated, quite the opposite. Don't know what causes it and I've had colonoscopy and upper GI and ultrasound (all show nothing). I am on medication and eating low fodmap for the past two weeks and I've only had two episodes since then. Hoping this will stop now.
Hi! I've had IBS since in my late teens and I am 64 yo now and a registered nurse. Of course we are all different and have different experiences with IBS. Having said that, I wanted to add that typically IBS does not wake you from sleep. If you haven't been tested please do so because treatments are different. Being awakened from sleep is more typical of Inflammatory bowel disease I.e. Crohns, ulcerative colitis, etc. and these can only be diagnosed during colonoscopy and biopsy of the bowel. I'm not saying this is what you have only that in over 50 years of dealing with IBS I've only been awakened from sleep a few times with symptoms.
I've had three colonoscopies and all had biopsies taken and nothing found. My doctor is useless and i refused anymore treatment from the hospital as i can't tolerate any of the prep they give me to clear my bowel, yet they keep giving it to me knowing that my bowel won't be very clear and then saying it needs to be repeated. More research into how the bowel becomes irritable is needed. I know my symptoms are not normal with ibs but there are that many that people have that we can't all have the same symptoms all the time. I have no other symptoms that suggest it could be ibd so im stumped.
