Various forms of IBS?
IBS-C and IBS-D are just two ways to categorise IBS. C = sufferer mainly has constipation. D = sufferer mainly has diarrhoea. There is also IBS-M where the symptoms shift between constipation and diarrhoea. There is no one cause of any of these types of IBS and like you, people may find that fibre makes their IBS worse. Conversely, though, some people will find that fibre makes their symptoms better, too.
You might also hear of PI-IBS. This is post-infectious IBS. In these cases, patients get IBS after a bout of gastroenteritis.

I never heard of this one. My HMO KNOWS VERY little. WHAT is gastroenteritis? If you read it somewhere, can you help me find it? I would like to talk to my doctor about it.
I know after I got sick in Mexico,I was never the same with my stomach. I had that Montezumas Revenge.Ever since that trip my stomach was never the same.
Thanks,
Sky
Hi Skyrooms - Gastroenteritis is a severe bout of sickness and diarrhoea which can last for quite a long time, my husband had it many years ago for about a week. Unlike the normal stomach bug it's more severe.
I see you mentioned Montezumas Revenge - I have never heard of that before so I googled it and see that is severe sickness and diarrhoea. I would say by looking at the two conditions you most certainly have post infection IBS. My IBS started after I had had food poisoning.
Hope this helps.
Gastroenteritis is an infection of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach or bowels) that typically causes diarrhoea and vomiting. Montezuma's revenge would certainly count as that. About 10 percent of IBS cases are believed to be caused by an infection like this.
Patient: I have never been the same aftet that Mexico trip. Why cant US doctors tell us about things like this? I guess in my 20s they didnt know about IBS. HOWEVER,MY US doctors are so timid about where we may have gotten the IBS from. Its not even a discussion. 2 of my gastro doctors think it has nothing to do with food at all. Its all stress related.??
It's not just in the US. Most of my understanding about IBS I have taught myself using reputable sources but also learning from my own and other sufferers' experiences. I can't explain why your doctors don't have an explanation. Maybe they don't realise it's important to you. One thing I've found is that different patients want different things. Some might just be happy to know it's nothing more serious, others really want help addressing the symptoms, and perhaps others would find comfort understanding how it started in the first place. Hopefully, in the future, we will know more about the different triggers and will be in a better position to match the treatment (where we have them) to the cause. Until then, though, it might not seem too important for some doctors to know the cause because it doesn't help them treat the condition.

I had IBS d since going under general anaesthetic and my gut has never been the same. I have no evidence of reading this to have a connection.
