Ampitryplene IBS

I have IBS and anxiety. Have been taking 10g ampitriplene for 3 years and my IBS has been ok. However 2 months ago had bad attack of anxiety which flared my IBS up. Dr increased ampitriplene to 20mg but this caused irritabity and sleep disturbances but calmed IBS. Dr told me to drop to 10mg to see if the sleeping and anxiety improved. It has improved but my IBS is back. Could going back to my original dose cause IBS again. I was on higher dose for nearly three weeks but felt awful on them.

Everyone reacts differently to medications. It might be worth speaking to the pharmacist about this.

I was on 70 mg of Amytrptylene for my back and have managed to reduce it slowly , very slowly to 50 mg so far.

It takes time to adjust to new dose I’ve had to increase to 30mg from 10 mg and yes sometimes get sleep disruption

I was put on 20 mg of amitriptyline about 6 months ago for IBS. It took me ages to get used to the medication as it would knock me out for 12 hours sleep. If I didn’t take it early enough I would really struggle to get up early enough in the mornings for work. It 100% helped me personally with my IBS so I stuck with it and over time I learnt to adapt and get used to the medication and it’s effect on me. I would maybe speak to your doctor again??

I thought Amitriptolene was for her e pain? I can't see how it would help IBS. I tried it for a different condition of nerve pain a d it made my IBS really bad, causing the runs constantly with bad stomach pains. It might be an idea to go back to your GP and see if there is a less aggressive medication that would suit you better. IBS in my opinion is caused by bad gut flora. It might be a good idea to try taking Symprove. It's expensive but you could get a small bottle and try it for a week. It's really helpful in IBS and one of the only products that is supposed to get the right bacteria into the gut alive.

Meanwhile stick to the low Fodmaps diet and try cutting out the main IBS culprits dairy, wheat and yeast.

I use it solely for ibs symptoms. I'm on 50mg, as 10mg did almost nothing for me. Without it I'm in agony and am unable to work, because some of the effects include muscle relaxants it can help wit ibs a lot. Even using it now I'm still in pain most of the time but it's manageable.

I was put on prednisilone (steroids) a year ago for an amergjc skin condition. Initialky 40mg for a few months. It had a miraculous effect on my IBS. All stomach pain s went away and I could eat things I hadn't eaten in years, but as it was reduced down to around 15mg the effects were not as good. Steroids are not good long term as I now have Moon face. It changes the appearance if your face by pumping it up and rounding it. But it could settle your IBS. Have a word with your doctor.

Sadly GP's don't normally prescribe steroids for IBS. The effects sometimes outway the need. As IBS is a collection of symptoms with no known cause, there technically is nothing to physically treat. Yes it may help symptoms if your taking it for something else like severe skin problems but IBS is largely related to diet and stress to a greater or lesser degree.

Hi Pam. I found it took me time to adjust my sleeping on 50mg, It took some time but I got use to it. If 30mg is what helps then id advise its better to get user to a different sleep pattern than suffer in pain.

I was on this drug 10 mg for about 15 years finally developed an allergy to it then discovered I had NAFLD although never a drinker.

Reason remains a mystery but to me this drug is a prime suspect , so my advice is beware

I was on this for about 6 months and my liver enzymes went a bit wild so came off it

Very interesting as I said I am sure it is the prime suspect for causing my

Has anyone been on trifluorperazine (stelazine)? I felt that I lost muscle tissue permanently on it. I wondered if it had given me liver damage but was told that all my liver blood test results were normal.

Amitriptyline was originally an antidepressant. Yet it works on central nervous systems. I have 10 mg for scar ( inside & out) pain. It doesn't help my Crohn's disease and short bowel syndrome at all. However that's IBD not IBS so may be some difference?. It knocks me out. A x
