Probiotics

I thought that I might just try some probiotics and have purchased the ones someone spoke about on here probiotica 7 from Holland and Barrett. My question is when is the best time to take these? Obviously they cannot be ingested with hot food as this destroys the good bacteria.

I'm not sure it matters. On a more or less empty stomach whatever time of day. The point is to get the flora into the lower gut, best done when it can get through the stomach quickly. That may mean not at bed time. Similarly I suppose don't take with a hot drink. Have you searched the net to see if there's an optimum time? At those prices you surely want decent effect out of it?

I'm not even sure avoiding hot food is necessary. Once in you mouth the food's lost a lot of heat or you could not eat it.

You might find this unhelpful. It suggests there's little evidence they help even in IBS. I've heard of cases where you can get a "poo transplant". That is someone else's gut flora are extracted and given to you. these are extreme cases. The only place I can see it helps is if you've had anti biotics for some reason (they destroy friendly bacteria too.) and a probiotic MAY help return gut health to normal. You're probably better cutting out you trigger foods, fizzy drinks and the usual rubbish we like.

Just a thought. Wouldn't hot food destroy your own gut flora? It doesn't.

Presumably there's no problem. Good luck in your search.

Dietician suggested the best time to take a probiotic is at breakfast time as the good bacteria can get to the stomach, small bowel quicker when there is no food or liquid in there from earlier in the day. I was advised by Dietician (who I see every 6 months) to take those little bottles called Actimel. They come in a variety of fruit flavours or just plain naturel.

I take my probiotic with my main meal each night with which I have water with and have had no problems with as I know it's working as since taking them my bowel habits have completely regulated which makes me feel happy but I still suffer with IBS issues most days I still need to get on top of this but after 25 years living with IBS I doubt I ever will.

I took the first one today with a snack mid morning. Surely if it has to get into the gut then the coating has to be able dissolve later to enable this? I have enteric peppermint capsules. So far I have only taken the one and will take one a day to see if I have any reaction to them. Thanks for your replies
