I have another question, I have not eaten meat for the last 25 years although I do eat fish. So many people have said that I would probably have less problems with IBS if I ate meat.

I just wondered if anyone has made the decision to return to eating meat ,and felt better.

Well I presume a veg diet only would inevitably be a high carb diet and high carbs seems to equal high FODMAPS which seem to fuel gut discomfort in IBS .animal protein equals low FODMAPS thus fewer IBS triggers .i am no expert but I suggest you look at the low FODMAPS diet and see what veg you need to avoid on that and adapt your vegetarian diet to it ...and keep eating fish , and see how you get on

When i was diagnosed i stopped eating meat and found it helped me. I have considered going back but people have actually told me not to as it didn't make sense. Ultimately it depends on what's right for you though. You could try with chicken first and see how you get on as this is easier to digest. If it's for health reasons then it may be worth looking at your current diet and see what could be changed. For me I am finding that eating more seeds and nuts is helping.

Hello im not a vegetarian but I have tried the low fodmap diet and what I learnt doing that was that being a fruit and veg lover and lover of pulses, that my gut really struggled to cope with those foods. I found that certain fruits and veg were more likely to cause issues. Its all to do with how certain foods break down in the gut and cause excess gas and bloating, some people get cramps and ibs symptoms caused by that process.pulses are a big problem for me as is cous cous too much wheat and too much dairy. I learnt a lot about my body and how it copes with food and even some drinks like juices whilst on the diet. I dont have to stick to it rigidly anymore, I did it for around 5 months. So if I were you Id look carefully at the foods you eat, I wouldn't necessarily go back to eating meat if thats your lifestyle choice, meat especially red, is heavy on the gut anyway. Increasing your fluid intake and eating in moderation, taking regular gentle excercise all helps.

I think that your symptoms should decide what you eat - mine is diarrhorea and so certain brassicas affect me - I eat almonds though for the calcium as I am now on a dairy free diet.

You could still look at food elimination on a vegetarian diet to see if any paricular foods are triggers

After being a veggie for over 20 years I made the decision to add meat into my diet and feel so much better. I try to stick to low fodmap diet but I also don't eat processed food anymore. Hence why I gave up being veggie.

Vege for 25yrs too and had to go low FODMAP. I was lacking so much energy I only last week started red meat. So far so good. Not sure I will do it long term, but for now it gives me the energy my body has lacked for so long.

So trust your body and what it tells you.

Hi, Ive been a vegi. for as long as I remember , and could not eat meat now . yes like you like you eat fish ...I know a friend who went on to try meat after a few years ., but could not manage it . do stick to your healthy diet . and let the animal , live . please ... also suffer from IBS. and am sure meat would only make it worse ...

Meat is certainly more heavier on the stomach, high protein in meat or lentils may even make you gassy. If you do decide to eat meat make sure its a slow introduction and note down how your IBS is responding to this.
