Have just started on FODMAP diet and need so... - IBS Network
Have just started on FODMAP diet and need some help with snack foods whilst out and about. Any ideas please?
I also just started and am using the IBS book by Patsy Catsos. Good snacks are blueberries, almonds, carrots, rice cakes, rice crackers and there is a recipe for a granola bar which is a good filling snack.
Patsys book is very good. I take small plastic pots out in my bag with gluten free oatcakes and another pot with nuts and small amounts of dried fruit. Grapes are okay, and I have got on ok with nature valley granola bars. Rice cakes are taken around in plastic bags when travelling to hotels in place of bread products. I get on ok with bananas but they are messy to take around. I recently travelled round in Africa and only had two bad times in 17 days, but I think that was less due to food than to rough road travelling, being tired and a couple of sleepless nights (noisy dogs fighting and monkeys shouting!). After resting up I was okay again. Hope this helps...
I carry rice crackers or corn thins with me. cornthins.com/
Sue Shepherd etal have a new book out now 'The Complete Low-Fodmap Diet: A Revolutionary Plan for Managing IBS and Other Digestive Disorders' which I've ordered...looks good!
Four weeks on FODMAPs via NHS dietitian now...have appointment to review then start reintro in September.
Thank you to all. Will organise myself in future to take some things with me. Not seeing the dietician for another 6 weeks so it's difficult when you have questions and nowhere to get the answers. Have bought a book from Amazon which is really good but as it's American the brand names don't translate and it's difficult to work out the English equivalent.
When you have your appointment the dietitian will give you 3 booklets ,well, mine did : 'Reducing fermentable carbohydrates the low FODMAP way', 'Suitable products for the low fodmap diet' (scoured this one for stuff available from local supermarkets: if you're a dairy fiend like me, the Lactofree range i.e. milk, yogourt, cheese available at Sainsburys and others is a lifesaver) and 'Reintroducing FODMAPS'.
Let us know how you get on.
I struggled with snacks, too. Once I got the hang of the diet, I created a list of sample snacks, which you can view here: livinghappywithibs.com/cate... Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!
I've just spent ages reading your blog. And what a pleasure to find somebody who is so positive and honest! I'm new to this thing they call IBS and am just working out my triggers. Ve yet to be diagnosed as I'm waiting for further tests to probably show there is nothing wrong with me, however anybody who suffers with IBS knows that there is something wrong and the impact that it can have on our daily lives.
Recently food has become such an issue for me and I realised that I was getting myself very worked up about what I coud and couldn't eat. So rather than stress about the safe foods and unsafe foods, I realise that we all have different triggers. Your list of high and low foods I'm a fantastic as I will definitely use this as a guide to reintroducing foods back into my diet. Fortunately I am ok with wheat! And with chocolate too!
Thanks for writing such an honest blog, I will definitely be trying out some of the recipes that you have included!
Can you eat bread and if so white or brown? Also can you eat shredded wheat.
I eat gluten free oat cakes, rice cakes, gluten free sweet and salty popcorn and proper plain crisps such as Kettle.
