Staph Infections Rifampin

Has anyone had to use rifampin while on Zytiga? Jim has been having recurrent skin staph infections. His PCP is considering rifampin, but UCSF says he'll have to double his Zytiga & prednisone dosage for a month and get two week metabolic panel bloodwork. Jim's not wanting to rock the boat since his numbers are so very good.

Thank you

A clinical trial looked at this issue in 2012/13 and concluded that Rifampin reduced the absorption of abiraterone/Zytiga by 50%. Here's a link to the results.

Yes thats the case. Jim's MO at UCSF has already prescribed the additional Zytiga, prednisone, and bloodwork. But Jim's going to skip the rifampin for now. Everything is going too well and he doesn't want to rock the cancer boat over this.

Hi, I have a suggestion that’s worth a try, ONLY if your comfortable. Braggs apple cider vinegar. Dilute in water, start with just a teaspoonful and drink. Also Wild oil of oregano, just read up on it, make sure you get wild Mediterranean strength 83% Carvacrol. All is not made the same, as I order from Healthy Healths all natural food grade. Try 4 drops in a capsule for a week and see how it goes. Also please read about ACV and staph infections.

I'm for trying anything that won't interfere with Jim's Zytiga. Thank you for the suggestions. The dermatologist today was completely unhelpful.

If that is the case, I can jump in here: essential oils topically applied (diluted) can help treat the staph. I would start with a combo of Tea Tree and Thyme oil. You can add Lavender as well, if you like. Both Tea Tree and Thyme have a clean, fresh (some people would say 'antiseptic' scent, so not unmanly 🙂). They are strong and concentrated, so use them in dilution and do a test patch on the skin first. I would use a formula as follows: in a 4oz bottle: 3oz of aloe vera gel and 1 oz jojoba oil (alternate: 4 oz aloe vera gel only) with 7 drops per oz of Tea Tree (total of 28 drops) and 3 drops per oz of Thyme (total of 12 drops). I am giving you the per-ounce numbers so you can make more or fewer oz's as needed. This formula is a 2% dilution. Shake before applying 1-2x daily, at least 2 hours apart. Please feel free to ask any questions you have! All of the items I've listed (including a flip-top bottle) can be purchased online at Mountain Rose Herbs.I mention them because I trust the quality of their oils. An alternate company is Hopewell Essential Oils - they carry everything but the flip-top bottle.

Source: I have studied and used essential oils extensively for the past twelve years.

Thank you for the detailed information!! I'm a huge fan of essential oils but have not used them in years and have limited knowledge.

Really appreciate it

I'm glad to have been able to remind you of them 🙂..if you try this and have any questions, please feel free to reply here or private message me any time! Best wishes to your husband ..and extra good energy and hugs to you!!

*****EDIT: please note I have updated the 'total drops' amounts on the 2 oils. I originally calculated for a 2 oz bottle and then switched to 4 because it is easier if using the jojoba. The weaker dilution (14Tea Tr/6 Thy(original numbers) vs 28Tea Tr/12 Thyme (updated numbers) would be 1% dilution, gentler and a little slower, but still effective.

I agree with Sunlight, oil of oregano is very strong...maybe a drop in a glass of water to start. ACV does it all, easy and cheap!

Thank you! ACV seems unanimous

PS If you use Oregano oil internally, take it with oil, instead of water. It will be gentler on the mouth (water will make it burn more). Cold pressed olive oil is perfect, cold pressed avocado oil or cold pressed almond oil are also work well.

My guess is this has been confirmed as a staph infection, correct? Have you tried just gently washing the affected areas and other areas of the body where staph may harbor, armpits, between the toes, groin, and just using it as a general body wash for several days? He can use Hibiclens or chlorhexidine. Also after, rub some triple antibiotic ointment on some open areas, under the nose, groin, navel. Does he have any open irritated cysts, boils, follicles where it could enter? If it's MRSA, it may need the old antibiotic cocktail. None of the modern stuff works (ie Cipro) since it's been handed out like candy for the last 30+ years,

Actually this latest one hasnt... Went to a dermatologist today and had to insist he swab it. He didnt seem concerned and said mupirocin was fine, no antibiotics. He didnt give any suggestions for prevention or alternative treatment. In a big hurry. So im looking for a different one. I just dont think we need to mess with Jim's cancer treatment that is working so well as is. Thank you so much for the suggestions, great ideas and better than the big guns at this point.

Agree with mupirocin (Bactroban). The resistant staph colonizes the nose/ nasopharynx. Treat the nose each side with a few cc of mupirocin ointment, perhaps twice daily. Search “nasal staphylococcus and mupirocin” for details. The skin infections are likely secondary to this.

Thank you!! That's exactly what we were trying to find out from the Dermatologist yesterday. Found a new one but can't get in until Oct 4th. Will try this, as his primary care physician mentioned it but decided to go with rifampin, so we didnt get details on the nasal treatment.

Tsim, so true and good advise for JW. Your advise + ACV and maybe a good garlic complex or oi of oregano 2 to 4 drops in a capsule could very well do it. Good Luck and let us know how it goes. Please investigate everything to make an informed choice.

JW I totally agree with you. Make sure you purchase Braggs ACV with the mother. I will never make a suggestion here, unless it is well thought out and used with no harm. Good Luck to you JW!
