Are YOU...Allergic to STREXercise ?

I hope you read that title correctly!

And yes... some folk do think that they are ! Or worse than that, they think they may be too old do do any!

Well, I am sorry to disappoint you... if you do have any of those self doubts...because they are totally unfounded.

Exercise is very, very good... at ANY age.

So, having got that out of the way...here we go, with some ideas for the slightly more seasoned of we forum friends. Me included.

I may be fortunate, but I do have a personal mind-set, re- my age... I KNOW how old I am... but most of the time, and sometimes to my cost, I FORGET, how old I am. E.g. I think I can still do, everything, I did when I was much, much, MUCH younger ! My body does, sometimes have to give me a reminder that that is not always the case.

I do and will continue, to do what I can, to keep my body and my mind, in good shape.

Okay...

Excuses: Responses:

I hate exercise Find exercise that you like

Exercise is boring Find one that is fun

I haven't got time. Yes you have. you just have to find it.

NOW :

Question.

Are you, what my Nan used to call me, a wriggle-bum? I was never still, always on the go, doing something...on my feet, walking around, walking. Running, and climbing trees. I was and still am ,a mover and doer. My Mum and Nan were the same, always on the go... jobs done and time to rest after that.. usually late afternoon and evening.

Fact : A couch potato is more likely to carry more weight and likely to suffer from sitting around-related issues, than some one who moves!

We know than we need to move... great start... but how do we build on that...we need to find something we enjoy. Something that is fun and we have time to do it.

Loads of past posts on here, with loads and loads of ideas. Many, to do with strength. CORE strength.

Exercise helps your heart get stronger, can help build muscle, and it is essential to our well being, physical and mental.

So

Some choices for exercise, that isn't !

I am going to put links here too, to past posts. If you have not read them... DO it NOW:)

Walking...the best exercise ever, ( my Nan told me ).

healthunlocked.com/strength...

Core strength..

healthunlocked.com/strength...

And there is a Post 2 on that !

So, when you have taken a look at those posts: start thinking out of the box..

Dance... yep... dance.

Hip hop. Swing dancing, tango, rhumba or cha cha your way to working out! It can get everything going, heart rate, stretching, flexing, and generally enjoying it!

Play,

Anything or everything. Tennis, hand ball, table tennis, or just play. With your children, your grandchildren, or your friends offspring. Play games with them, take them to the park... get every bot of your body and your mind involved.

Climb !

Hills or rocks! I can tell you from first hand knowledge, that rock climbing or bouldering... it uses every bit of your body ,from top to toe!

Grasshopper time ( You have to have watched this Series...) , Judo, karate, T'ai Chi... which I find amazing! Yoga.

Stand up on the job.

Standing desk maybe, park further away from your job location, run up stairs, whole flights of them., take a walk in your lunch hour...walk to work or cycle.

So many choices out there but YOU have to find the exercise that YOU enjoy, and that will support and strengthen that body of yours...

If you doubt that, read some of CBDB 's rowing posts, latest one... ?

healthunlocked.com/strength...

… and she has posted more... just scroll around:)

skysue16 has those very evening posted a link too, on her post... take a read please.

And me, what have I done this month?

I kept up my regular yoga routines..

Fell by the wayside again with YWA !!!!!

I have continued my teeth cleaning squats and ankle raises.

I have walked and I have played... a lot with my granddaughter. Bending, stretching climbing and more.

I have gardened, lifting and loading, digging and planting.

I have done all the housework bit and still found time to paint and write!

I know, this has supported my regular chosen exercise running...! My body tells me so.

Okay... your turn now,.. the last week in June.... have you exercised your way through it.. did you do any strength and stamina work...you may not have done... and has that shown in a negative way?

Just pop in if you get time... and let us know.

We jived and jived some more this past weekend and last week saw me do loads in the garden and on my lovely old VW bus too.

As you may already know, I'm signed off work at the moment and not having that very stressful three-day intermission each week has done wonders for my energy levels, although how long that will last when I get back to work is another thing 🙁

Whilst the manic jive nights have somewhat taken their toll this week, I'm still far better than I would have been previously, which gives me food for thought 🤔

I also have my thinking cap on about S&F adaptations as the nearest park is five miles away so it's not practical. I'm sure there are things to do in and around the house - I managed before so I'm sure I can again, I just have to remember how!

Walking is going well - I'm averaging 8500 steps a day now, which is a massive improvement. However, I know that will drop right down again once I get back to work 🙁

Anyway, more than enough from me!

Oh gardening! That’s something I’ve been missing so much! Mine is all overgrown with weeds but not much I can do about it at the moment so I’ll sort it when I can!

I love the thought of you being a wee jive bunny! 🤗🖤

Hello!

Thank you so much for dropping in... I had a really busy day yesterday and literally never stopped moving ! Another workout day !

Jiving! Yes!!! It sounds as if you had a lot of fun. Not content with that...gardening and restoration?

The break from work is clearly welcome... and recharging is so, so important. As you say, though, it is hard to hold onto that, when back at work. You do seem to have some ideas ?

Walking to the park. probably not, could you drive and then use the par to do other things when there? The steps you are geeing in are a lot, and keeping that up at work... well, tricky!

You are giving me some ideas for future posts here, here too !

Pleas, do let us know what your adaptations might be, and thank you so much for sharing this with us... and giving me some ideas too ! x

Fab post about moving (movit movit 🎶🎶🎶🎶)

I might need to make a song playlist about “moving”! 😅

I am at that stage where I need my daily row! Really unhappy if I don’t!

I used to be like that with cycling when younger. Running if I don’t do it for a week. But rowing is a daily thing for me! It really makes me happy, and a grumpy day is often brightened up by a little row.

So many exercise types that might rock one’s boat.

(And I love my new standing desk!)

Now I have an ear worm! !!

Sorry for the late reply... yesterday was very much a moving day, although the heat did not help at all!

Yes, your rowing... it is what I think about when I see CBDB on a post...and it is clearly, your go to, as you say on a daily basis. It is wonderful how we all have our own preferences and what we really can almost, not do without!

I feel as you say, that if we look, there is something there for every one...

Just thinking on the standing desk... made me think. When I taught, I think the only time I sat down was when I was on a break in the Staff Room!

Thank you for sharing this with us x

Hi Floss,

No couch potato days for me when little grandson is around💙...I need to be able to lift, kneel, crawl, stretch and weight bear, and my YWA has been supporting all this.

After a run day when I can feel a little tight in the legs, my yoga always provides ease and relief to my back, shoulders and legs too.

I like repeating the 30 day programs because they build on each other, some practices are core based, some are gentle, some have a mixture of strength and stretch. I do enjoy Adrienes banter too, she makes me laugh.

I have been able to fit two runs per week in, and stepped on the mat for YWA most days this month.

Gardening, 10 pin bowling, and squeezing in some housework along with days out with family. Relaxing in the evening with some knitting which I enjoy.

All the best kind of busy....(apart from the dusting ☺️)

🧘‍♀️xxx

Your yoga has been an absolute support for you, through so much. I need you here to help me keep on track with it!!!

Plus... what a lot of extra activities too ! All of which are impacting your movement and your strength and stamina.. including your finger strength, knitting :) x

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us ! x

Hi Floss! 🤗 it’s been a while since I’ve popped in for a visit 🖤

Since my injury and surgery 7 weeks ago, I was non weight bearing for 6 weeks while in a cast so I couldn’t really do much except for hop about on my left leg with crutches.

On the plus side, my balance on left leg has become really good and I now have a very strong left leg and glute, but with pain and discomfort too. Hopefully that’ll ease off once I get physio appointment sorted soon.

Since getting my cast removed last Tuesday, I’ve been using a walker boot to get about while still using crutches. I’m gradually going to be increasing the amount of weight bearing over the next 6 weeks. It feels great being able to have both feet on the ground! 💜

I’ve been doing the exercises the charge nurse at fracture clinic emailed me last Friday, I’ve attached a photo of the 3 I can do for now and I’m slowly but surely increasing the amount of reps I can do. So far I can do towel toe scrunches and isometric ankle inversions and eversions. Next week I will try the next exercise which includes a resistance band.

Improvised yoga stretching on my bed has been keeping me sane and all the aches and pains at a minimum. I’m glad I can do child’s pose and pigeon pose much better without the cast!

Your mantra ‘slow and steady’ has also become my mantra. Every day I can do a tiny bit more and last night I took a video of my ankle movement progress…I can do bigger ankle rolls with more ease now and that makes me happy!

I do really miss pottering about in the garden, but as you say, that can wait just like the walks and runs…one thing and one day at a time!

I seem to have rambled a bit 🙈 oops!

Ankle strengthening exercises…
