Hello everyone and here I am again, after one heck of a week !

If work-outs are the thing we should be doing, well, since last Wednesday, I have done a lot; most of it, not even remotely connected with running, walking, cycling or anything else!

Furniture moving , (heavy oak furniture), lifting, loading, bending , stretching holding and fixing! Exercise in your daily activities? My post from way back took on a while new meaning!

But what I hear you say, has this got to do with exercising? Everything.

Because, when finally everything was in place, I started to think.

Throughout all of the activities , that I have been involved in over the last week, one of the things that was of paramount importance to us...was... food! Nutrition , hydration... fuel. Keeping ourselves going!

I am,, as some of you know, still building back to full strength and one aspect of that, is trying to increase my weight and the improvement of muscle tone. It is essential for me, that I am mindful of what I put into my body to help with this. So...this led me to think about my chosen exercise and that of other friends here. The importance of what we fuel our body with, when we are putting the wonderful machine that is our body, through the rigours of exercise.

This led to a few questions, which, certainly on running forums, we get all the time...

What to eat... and the big one...Should we exercise before or after a meal?

Think, can of worms... ! I started researching this and my goodness.... what an enormous amount of information is out there!

The next question that followed those first two? Does the timing, of what we eat and drink, affect our health?

Okay, why do we think that this is important... well, for many folk, it seems, it may not just be about performance, but more to do with the burning of fat and weight loss!

The whole thing is very scientific and fairly complicated and complicated more, by the fact that we are all so very, very different.

One thing that became evident. is that when we eat or do not eat, is about a whole lot more than losing weight .

Rather than go through all the facts that I found, I am going to pop a link here to the excellent video link, and transcript, put out by the ZOE foundation, which many, many of you are aware of, from the Pandemic years and beyond. I and many friends on these forums, began recording with them during the pandemic and still do... but the amount of information which they continue to share, about so many other things is incredibly interesting and useful.

Please, if you can find the time, do take a look or have a listen.

Moving on now to you... and me!

What about us?

I have my routines and my own rules before exercise, and before my running.

For my normal runs, or home exercise routines, which I nearly always do before 8.a.m. My morning cuppa and two digestive biscuits... is what I have about an hour before... laving the house with just a sip of water . Breakfast, waits until I return...

Running from home, up to an hour or so, I would never change that. If I was running later, or in a race, I would have something more appropriate, as long as it was two hours before. T'ai Chi day, is always a big bowl of cereal with added flax seed and fruit, about an hour and a half before the class begins.

My after exercise breakfasts, are varied, anything from smashed avocado on toast, oatcakes and cheese, to any egg type breakfast, a real treat is smoked salmon and scrambled egg and on my long Sunday run day, home made pancakes with honey and bananas!

But that is me and my routines. What is right for me, may not be for you.

Our amazing MissUnderstanding was going to put a post on C25K about breakfast, before or after runs, .. the London Marathon post, ( go take a look at that), took precedence on that post ; so I am adding this in here which goes on step further maybe:?

Interesting reading!

I did get a lovely mantra from one site I visited, in line with my three As... these ones are relating to the fuel we put in, in order to get the performance out...because our wonderful unique machine of a body really does need the correct fuel !

Here are the Three Rs:

Refuel, rehydrate, and repair..... :)

So, your turn now.. what are your thoughts; and what do you do before or after exercise.

We would love to hear your thoughts and get an insight whether you are a before-er or after-er!

Looking forward to see who drops in !

What an interesting podcast. I remember watching a programme on tv by the twin doctors Xand and Chris. They did a programme about eating before or after exercise. I think they found out it was different for women. BUT I am definitely a no breakfast runner 😂 Cannot eat anything before a run and often don’t eat until lunchtime because I don’t feel hungry. I probably make up for it later in the day!

Hello! Thanks for sharing this with us! I will have to have a look around for that programme. I was surprised just how much information there is on this subject and the differing points of view ,too.

Interesting too here, that you don't eat until lunchtime sometimes,.. I know I am very hungry when I get in, ( even after a gentle jogette), and really ready for my food after a quick shower. I assume you do drink water afterwards though?

So good to hear from you and I really hope a few more folk drop in to share thier experiences:)

Good post and information from you Oldfloss, I eat breakfast before I go a run but I wait at least one hour before the run, however, I do other exercises before breakfast immediately I get out of bed, planks, a little yoga and a few kettle bell workouts

Thanks Al and so good to hear your experiences ! I think your pattern is similar to many of the forum friends; I do know from the posts that many start with a banana, I like mine later or on a Sunday with my honey and pancakes!

I think the exercises you do before breakfast are a great idea. They really do start the day in a good way. Getting everything moving and all those muscles starting to warm up , even before you go out?

I was surprised how big a part of our T'ai Chi, the warm up is... it is at least 10 minutes and very gentle. but gets everything zinging.

I am going to pop a post in next month on Couch in the Catch up Corner, related to this subject, I hope you will call in and share there too.

Thank you... you are a superb example of how all that we do for our running health, keeps us moving!

Thank you Al x

Thanks for the shout out! I find breakfast the easiest meal to eat before working out. I know I’m fine with a cup of coffee and toast, oatcakes, bagels, a banana…that sort of thing! If I’m running or doing weights/yoga/pilates, I can pretty much eat as I leave the house. Swimming or Zumba I’ll try and eat a bit earlier. Afterwards, I’ll have a banana, nuts, oatcakes, protein balls-that sort of thing! If I’m at home, I like peanut butter on toast!! I love a posh brunch but that has to be well away from exercising!! Similar to you, I love eggs and avocado, shakshuka, huevos rancheros, eggs florentine, scrambled egg on toast…. Basically I need some pet chickens!!

Working out later is trickier. I try and wait an hour, depending on what I’ve had for lunch. If I’ve had a decent meal, I wouldn’t eat afterwards unless it was a particularly long run. Swimming always makes me hungry!!! I love a packet of mini cheddars after a swim! I’m not pretending that’s because of their nutritional value,

Who doesn’t love a packet of mini cheddars 😂 I am going to look up some of those breakfasts you mention……sound interesting. I mostly have quick porridge before work in the week 😊

I am not sure how you manage on such a light breakfast! You do wonderfully!

My Nan always said to me.. Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and supper like a pauper... Mind , she was heading out for a day with a roomful of small whirlwinds and had more time.

Wen I was still teaching, I did get up at 5.30 and made sure I had a really good breakfast! My Nan's words still resonate with me today... :)

Nice breakfast choices... Yummy !

Thank you for sharing your experiences... and really interesting to read your routines!

Interesting that you don't worry too much about timings...I have never eaten close to a run... but do eat fairly soon after them! Your ideas for posh brunches, I can so go with ! Chickens would be great...but need space and time:)

Funny how hungry we get... I am hungry after most exercise but currently, although it seems the gentlest of them, T'ai Chi makes me the hungriest!!

Thank you for sharing!! xxx

I’ve got better at eating closer to runs mainly through disorganisation leading to a lot of practice! I do think more carefully if it’s going to be a long run or a fast one. There have been a few near misses when lunch/dinner hasn’t sat well! We live and learn. Who could have predicated that a cheese pasty wasn’t good run fuel? Not me! 🤣

I did manage to have a super interval run after a curry once. I’m putting that down to more luck than judgement!!
