Workout: Adriene’s Cozy Yoga

Annual leave day, not a run day, so definitely a Cozy Yoga day with Adriene.

It’s a 38 min fun and relaxing session that plays with body, mind and blanket ( and a dog, if you happen to have one around). It’s a bit unusual, which Adriene admits herself.

But it’s certainly a session which leaves you feeling cozily relaxed. It goes through quite a few stretches and poses, almost all of them doable even for me, an unbendy, stiff (and rather aging) woman with sensitive knees.

I’m beginning to really respect Adriene’s way of doing her sessions. They are warm and friendly in how she chats about the different poses. They are gentle in how she makes sure everyone knows that this is about YOUR body and not about getting “yoga right”. And it’s creative in how she uses her body, her environment and all sorts of props around her, from blankets, dogs, hoodies, etc.

Yesterday evening I listened to the whole 2 hours of her being interviewed by Light Watkins. It was a recommended by @roseabi on here a couple of months ago and I finally listened to it.

And listening to her really made me understand what I do like about her Yoga videos:

I like that she manages to demystify the practice without removing the magic and the meditative elements. And I like this, as I know I’m not as open towards spiritual expressions of symbolisms that are - to me - too esoteric. But that’s just me.

I like that she plays around with the postures to get to know the ways how her body feels, and I can easily imitate and adapt this to my completely different body. For example, she does a downward dog in a way where she is still moving slightly, walking her feet in place, listening to what her body is saying and finding a right spot through smaller movements. I don’t know if this is general practice or not, but I like it. And I managed a downward dog without killing my legs for the first time today. It was all about technique and playing around with what feels good.

I also love the playfulness, and the harmlessness of breaking a pose. Wether it’s making little gestural jokes, or moving in and out of a pose when explaining things... these little releases from a pose or norm also help demystify a practice and keep our focus on what feels right for one’s body, rather than what is perceived to be right in a ancient, established practice. To me Yoga and it’s associated cultures have always felt a bit intimidating and with it not as inviting as it could be. And Adriene breaks through that by breaking some of my perceptions of its norms.

Ever since discovering Pilates, I knew my preference for Pilates had something to do with its pragmatic origins and thus pragmatic cultural practices of its community to which I felt more aligned.

But Adriene makes it hard not to love Yoga, even someone like myself who has a problem of drawing on what many yogi would call our spirituality, as I just don’t know what that actually entails.

I like my facts, my real world, and all the beauty contained in these. So a playful exploration of what our bodies can do, how they can change, grow and adapt, and whilst doing that delight in the process of play within movements, postures and instructions.... it’s just the for me perfect way to get to know Yoga. And judging by her popularity this probably goes for many others as well.

Thank you for all this CBDB, a beautifully written and thoughtful review, I think you have it spot on, Adriene is a gem as is her whole Find What Feels Good Kula. Reading your post it occurred to me that her approach to yoga that you describe so well could apply equally well to our running, giving ourselves permission to play around, adjust plans and guidance to suit our own unique needs and bodies, to run ‘without killing our legs’ and generally have fun 🤗

I can identify with everything you've so eloquently said! I found that podcast added a new depth/understanding/appreciation to the sessions too - some things that used to annoy me now make the sessions more personal, as if I know better where it's coming from. If you enjoyed cozy yoga, you might enjoy her latest session - Blanket Yoga. Some lovely gentle stretches and a whole lot of relaxation and self appreciation 😊Adrienne does some great yoga, but for me the icing on the cake is the emphasis on thinking about yourself - how you feel, how valuable you are just as you are - and not just to take time for yourself, but to take time to appreciate yourself. Really good stuff!

Yes, I did have a look when it came out but haven’t done it yet. Looks great!

I think in the new year I might to a challenge/event/plan all around workouts for getting to sleep, and separately morning workouts in bed!

Might be fun! And the blanket yoga sounds like a good one to do before going to bed!

Ooh yes! Adrienne has quite a few that are good for pre bedtime - there are meditations as well as true yoga sessions. She does several morning ones too, although I think you do need to crawl out of bed first 😊

Yeah, I know 🤨! I was looking for some in-bed stretches for myself, and found some fabulous ones, but none by Adriene. So I’m not sure how strict I should be when putting a list together for next year focussing on “morning in-bed stretches” 🤣🤣🛌

But of course, I’m now so tethered to her kind of yoga that she’ll just have to feature, bed or not! But I might just post a request to her to do a blankety-type of yoga IN BED!! 😂😂

Well, I just gave it a try. It has been about 13 years since I've done yoga and I can tell 😆 but I'm thinking I'll give a few of her videos a try. I'm restarting my meditation practice and this may help to continue the mindfulness. thanks for sharing this CBDB

I've been doing daily yoga with Adriene all year. She is lovely and funny and every session makes you feel better. They are not long sessions and once you begin you keep coming back to the mat for more. Benji is adorable too!🧘‍♀️🙏🐕xxx

I did this last night and found it very relaxing, and nice for my sore shoulders and neck after a bike ride! I liked having a 'blanky' and pillow too 😊

I've gone off yoga somewhat in recent years because I have a tendency to push too far and hurt myself (hamstrings mainly!). When I do do a yoga practice these days I really try to keep my knees bent, and lately staying up on my toes in downward dog I have found helpful.

I first tried yoga many years ago when I found out I had a little bit of spondylosis in my upper spine which gave me a nasty tight feeling across my ribs. I got a dvd from Amazon - 'Yoga for weight loss with Suzanne Deason'. I wasn't bothered about losing weight, but the video had three different difficulty levels, which I thought would be useful for me as a beginner, but being me I just ended up doing the 'advanced' yoga anyway 😁 I found that the breathing, and certain movements like twists completely rid me of the tight feeling, and other poses were great for my lower back too - bonus!

I was attracted to pilates because I saw it as a secular version of yoga, but I found I didn't like it nearly as much. So I keep going back to yoga now and then, and I think Adriene's great 😊😊😊

Yeah, I think my knees make me be really careful with quite a few poses, anything on my knees or bending knees 180 degrees (pidgin, child’s pose, cow cat, etc). But am beginning to learn alternative ways of doing them.

Yes, I love the sense of play and "finding what feels good". I also love the way she describes things - plugging your shoulders in, drawing a circle with your nose, and other really evocative ways to convey how to move through the poses. She also has an uncanny ability to know just the right time to drop in a reminder to relax the shoulders, keep breathing etc. I must check out that podcast, sounds interesting.

Yes! Completely agree. It just shows we all like being playful, even as adults. But I assume it was her long years of teaching of Yoga for kids which allowed her to become so confident in creative ways of relating postures and movements to different audiences.

Just a word of warning: podcast is 2 hours!
