I am a 53 yr African-American woman who has been struggling with knee issues for over 10 years. At around 40 yrs old I was told by my physician that I would, in the future, need both right knee and left hip replacement. Through the years my knee issues have become worse. I have taken the cortisone shots which did not work for me as they should have. I had been prescribed a few (6) rounds of physical therapy. I now have NO cartilage in either knee (you hear and can feel, if touching, the grinding) and have rheumatoid arthritis in both knees. When rising from a seated position takes a few due to pain. My health insurance carrier has not given the okay for knee replacements. Any thoughts on helpful exercises??

It sounds like you need knee replacements.
As far as exercises go, focus on stretching the muscle groups that compress your knees. Also stretch your calves. Gentle water exercise, and also micro circulation enhancing treatments such as pemf and lumix laser therapy can help.
I’m a physical therapist in St. Louis mo and would definitely have you come in for a consultation. There are a ton of holistic medicine self care strategies you could learn to decrease your pain and maximize your function.
Are you stating that an orthopedic surgeon has recommended joint replacement but your insurance company is denying you?

I understand how you feel. I have had knee pain for over ten years and have been told that I have arthritis in both knees. I was told to move more and I would feel better. But how do you move when your knees hurt?
Well, you can move - you just need to take away some of the pressure while you are moving. Can you get to a pool? Moving around in a pool helps. Do you have access to a stationary bike?
Have you discussed the insurance issue with your doctor?
I too have grinding in my right knee however my knee does feel better once I use the stationary bicycle on a regular basis. There are some exercises on line to help you stretch your muscles and strengthen them which could help with the pain. The pain does not go away completely but I find for me, it decreases it.
