Pineapples Are Good for your Health

Good info you might not know.....I surely did not....

This is wonderful information to have. I will start eating more of it.

A Simple Pineapple - MUST Read

The pineapple is a member of the bromeliad family.

It is extremely rare that bromeliads produce edible fruit. The pineapple is

the only available edible bromeliad today.

It is a multiple fruit. One pineapple is actually made up of dozens of

individual floweret's that grow together to form the entire fruit. Each

scale on a pineapple is evidence of a separate flower.

Pineapples stop ripening the minute they are picked.

No special way of storing them will help ripen them further.

Colour is relatively unimportant in determining ripeness.

Choose your pineapple by smell. If it smells fresh, tropical and

sweet, it will be a good fruit.

The more scales on the pineapple, the sweeter and juicier the taste.

After you cut off the top, you can plant it.

It should grow much like a sweet potato will.

This delicious fruit is not only sweet and tropical; it also offers many

benefits to our health. Pineapple is a remarkable fruit.

We find it enjoyable because of its lush, sweet and exotic flavor, but it

may also be one of the most healthful foods available today.

If we take a more detailed look at it, we will find that pineapple is

valuable for easing indigestion, arthritis or sinusitis.

The juice has an anthelmintic effect; it helps get rid of intestinal worms.

Let's look at how pineapple affects other conditions.

Pineapple is high in manganese, a mineral that is critical to development of

strong bones and connective tissue. A cup of fresh pineapple will give you nearly 75% of the recommended daily amount.

It is particularly helpful to older adults, whose bones tend to become

brittle with age.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme, is the key to pineapple's value.

Proteolytic means "breaks down protein", which is why pineapple is known to

be a digestive aid. It helps the body digest proteins more efficiently.

Bromelain is also considered an effective anti-inflammatory.

Regular ingestion of at least 1/2 cup of fresh pineapple daily is

purported to relieve painful joints common to osteoarthritis. It also produces mild pain relief.

In Germany, bromelain is approved as a post-injury medication because it is

thought to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Orange juice is a popular liquid for those suffering from a cold because it

is high in Vitamin C. Fresh pineapple is not only high in this vitamin, but because of the Bromelain, it has the ability to reduce mucous in the throat.

If you have a cold with a productive cough, add pineapple to your diet.

It is commonly used in Europe as a post-operative measure to cut mucous

after certain sinus and throat operations.

Those individuals who eat fresh pineapple daily report fewer sinus problems

Related to allergies. In and of itself, pineapple has a very low risk for allergies.

Pineapple is also known to discourage blood clot development. This makes

it a valuable dietary addition for frequent fliers and others who may be at risk for blood clots.

An old folk remedy for morning sickness is fresh pineapple juice.

It really works! Fresh juice and some nuts first thing in the morning often

make a difference.

It's also good for a healthier mouth. The fresh juice discourages plaque growth.

If you are on nifedipine, read the notes. You cannot have pineapples. Sorry.

I read the notes that came with my Adalat prescription. Absolutely no mention of pineapple. In fact the only food/drink it mentions is Grapefruit juice.

That was interesting Plumcake, I can't eat oranges they are too acidic; maybe pineapple will be better. Wonder if it's just as helpful on an upside down cake!

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake

I've not been able to finish the pineapple off bought cos I got a very sore tongue all split open and white bits around the split,Regular problem but usually after taking antibiotics.

The Nystatin oral suspension has not cured it this time. My dentist has referred me to a specialist at hospital.

I was advised against eating oranges and acidic fruit by Norah Wickerson tacklingfibro.co.uk/

Her combination diet is supposed to work but I found it impossible to stick to and very expensive.

Just checking your nifedipine never heard of that before.

Enjoy your pineapples Upside down cake, it's years since I had that. yummy.

Oh Plummie that sounds painful. I hope you get your hospital appointment soon. I had one come through this morning for an LFT and its for 5 March 2014, lol. I'll have a good read of that link with the diet, but I love bread, especially homemade and probably could only give it up for a few days! Afraid my upside down cake will have to be tinned pineapple this time.

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to dordle

It is very painful Dordle but not as bad as the pains in my body lately. YUK.

What is an LFT? sorry I don't seem to know the abbreviations on the net, have same trouble on Facebook. That's a blimming long wait a whole tear. dammit.

I used to make all my own bread by hand a full 3lb of fklour into 5 small loaves, wholemeal and white, it was delicious and I won 1st prize ever year at the Honey Show.

We used to keep honey bees in my thirties and then chickens, they are all gone now :( Miss the chooks and the bees I now provide good homes for solitary bees and made two bumble bee nest this week too.

Sorry for waffling on off subject but it's nice to let folks know what I get up to, I'm also doing a toad patrol to help toads across the road on their way to mate. Poor things, have had their fun cut out with this awful cold weather.

I was going to have an interview on radio Kent yesterday about it, but I handed it over to the expert on toading.

Hope your cake turns out ok would love a bit. x

O.o I'm all for pineapple eating, but don't over indulge folks! Especially if you want finger prints... did you know that the acid from pineapple juice is strong enough to wear away the ridges in your fingers? Yeah...potent stuff.

The natural sugar in fruit can be just as unhealthy as our regular granulated sugar too! So be careful with that. ^-^

Oh yeah and as for the Nifi / Pineapple reaction, in the notes I have regarding Adalat, the food you shouldn't be taking with Nifi is Grapefruit, no mention of Pineapple.

dordle profile image
dordle in reply to Blue-Bunny

oh my goodness, you learn something new every day on here! That info about finger prints could help a lot of criminals, lol. I'm lucky not to have to take Nifedipine but thats useful to know for those who do.

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to Blue-Bunny

Does it take off the ridges in your thumbnails i wonder?

I keep playing with mine they are so ridged now.

Is that right about the sugar? Amazingly folk buy the fruit sugar and it's very expensive stuff, in place of cane sugar. so it's all a con then?

Blue-Bunny profile image
Blue-Bunny in reply to Plumcake

Erm, I'm not sure what effect it has on nails...however, I would guess that yes it would. My reasoning...

Bones therefore nails are made up of 'calcium carbonates'.

Pineapple juice is acidic.

Acid + Calcium = ...well..

It depends on who's buying the Fructose. For general people, it's a con to be honest, for Diabetics (Type 1's specifically) it'd actually be useful.

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to Blue-Bunny

Don't know what happened to my post but I will have to do it again,

I am surprised about the bad report on fruit sugar, so looked it up on the net. what or who told you it was as bad for us as cane sugar?

discovergoodnutrition.com/2...

Blue-Bunny profile image
Blue-Bunny in reply to Plumcake

Sugar is sugar. Fructose, Glucose... it all effectively provides the same function. To provide energy. All sugars have the potential to rot the teeth (...though only if you're gonna soak your teeth in it...), damage your gums and pile on the weight.

In terms of dietary nutrition then having many different types of sugars are better than just 'glucose'. However consuming too much Fructose will have the same effect as Glucose. The only real benefit for consuming more Fructose is for Diabetics who have to regulate their sugar intake and insulin. For the general populace...just as bad as each other to be perfectly honest.

Try this differencebetween.net/scien... for a better understanding of the two basic types of sugar.

I wrapped up and went a long walk to the shops and bought a pineapple today. Thanks for info.

Plumcake in reply to Greta48

Good on ya :) I always laugh when i buy pineapples as I remember "the Snowman" who placed a pineapple on his nose when dancing at the little boys house that Xmas Eve.I always do it too. ha ha

Pinapple is a natural 'anti-inflammatory' - no need for ibuprofen rotting your stomach !

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to robbywhitefingers39

I'm going to buy another one I managed to eat the rest of that pineapple last night, and I am going to keep the top and grow it, Silly woman i am trying to avoid too much work with plants. But I always fall in the Spring fever trap.

Pineapples are indeed good and nutrious. When allowed to ripen normally under the tropical sun they are very sweet and delicious. As a child in the tropics there were pineapples readily available as Grandad grew them. The tops are cut off and replanted and watered to produce more fruit.

The only problem I find is that the ones I buy in the shops are not as sweet as I like them. Thank you for this information. I am prompted to start buying pineapples again.

If you have a juicer you can make a nice drink and you don't have to peel the fruit. Strain and add some nice crushed ice if desired, especially in the summer. ( very nice with a drop of rum also)

I am pretty certain that it's ok to have pineapples when taking Adalat. Thanks again.

Ps: For those who find the fruit difficult to peel you can find them peeled and ready to eat at the supermarkets.

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to graygirl1

Oh yes must try that add a bit of Malibu too, used to make cocktails with a little vodka and mango/guava or some nice juice and the rest is a secret lol

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake

Graygirl 1 you must have some fun in the sun with your Grandad growing them, how lovely. I imagine we will have to grow them indoors in the UK. too rotten and cold and wet last year to grow much at all.

Hi All ! I am on day 91 of a jucing and raw food diet. I have been following Jason Vale, juicemaster's plan, and have to say the difference in my energy levels and general well being is amazing ! I will post a feature on the blog section, as after 15 years of not being able to eat most foods and having constant acid as soon as I ate anything due to the scleroderma, I was at my wits end ! :)

Plumcake profile image
Plumcake in reply to living-the-dream-ssc-ray

I'm very pleased to hear you are getting somewhere at last. That's one hell of a long time to not be able to eat most foods..Not heard of this diet, will try to search the net. Do you have to stick to it now for ever or try a few cooked foods as and when?

I do no have scleroderma thankfully but my sister had it badly. Poor darling girl gone now. x

Hi Plumcake....ah so sorry to hear of your sister.... Bless her.

I hope you do not think of me being insensitive if I ask you how long had she been diagnosed ? Did she have any lung involvement ?

I feel very blessed that my diagnosis was identified in the early stages as well as being under the excellent care of Prof Black and Dr Denton as he was known in those days !

I did the Jason Vale lose 7lbs in 7 days to start with (juicemaster.com), and then incorporated solid food each day since then ! I did the initial 7 days of just juicing to detox and cleanse my system really, as the only bonus I have found of having scleroderma is that it is difficult to put on wieght, (oh, and another bonus is that you tan very quickly !) due to the malabsorption of the gut, along with other reasons.

I have also cut out carbohydrates (bread, pasta, potatoes) and feel so much better as well as feel more toned around my waist which interestingly, it is not as painful to move ! I have also spent most of the duration of my diagnosis being on and off antiobiotics and have an ongoing over growth of oral candida to show for it, and having not had any carbs for the last 3 months, I am trying to starve the overgrowth ! but had to have another course of antibiotics 2 weeks ago for the anaerobic bacteria grwing in the huge caclium lump and surrounding tissue of my left knee, which the candida on my tongue had a party in celebration, so I am back on the daily antifungal tablet as well as smearing what looks like wall paper paste over my tongue 4 times a day ! Living THE dream haha.

Wishing you all a lovely warm and cosy weekend, I am off to make my daily supergreen juice so I can jump off a doll's house ;)

Hello Living the dream

thanks for your comment, Unfortunately I do not know how long she had been diagnosed with Scleroderma, but some years. We kept in touch but were miles apart her being in North Wales me in south East Kent, UK.

June had other health problems including mental health issues as both me and my remaining sister do, but hers was worse.

I know hers seemed to start with a finger with a cut which would not heal. She became incontinent both ways, and also was very prone to putting on a hell of a lot of weight. Which is odd since you mention that it's hard to put it on. She had raynauds too.Probably sjogren's too as she had dry mouth and eyes like me. Once before she was diagnosed I went to visit her and would not have recognised her, she was so enormous.

All I know is she was for ever going here and there trying to get help she did not seem to make any difference.

She was on amitriptylene one of several drugs, and went into a frenzy when her husband took them away for her own safety to administer the dose each day.

He gave in and the next morning found her dead on the floor in the lounge, overdosed, and a note to her son saying "She was sorry but couldn't cope anymore.

Her misery had got the better of her. It was a dreadful shock, but I do remember her phoning me and talking in a rather juvenile voice a lot of rubbish, which I didn't take that much notice of as she was prone to phoning and accusing me of never being in touch and that i didn't care for her. which was not true.

I had to put the phone down on one occasion, saying I was not listening to to this .

Very upsetting.

Also I said to her once not long before the bad news, that I had a horrible feeling we would never see each other again, and she said "I have that same feeling"

Tears are filling my eyes now. :'(

She was planning it then. Just as my Mum had done when I was 11.. Again tears. :'(

a few days later i had a message on my answer machine saying she had seen my website and how good it was and I can't remember anymore.

The next I heard was when her son rang me whilst I had guests here, that I should sit down and listen. June was dead. I thought it was some kind of sick joke.

I miss her so much as she and I had a good sense of humour similar in nature and loved all animals. My dear sister I hadn;t see for years is gone.

Sorry I can't tell you anymore, i can't see the text for tears. Long time since i cried like this. But maybe good for me,as I'm very poorly lately.with a virus on top of the rest.Courtesy of a kind doctor who sneezed all over me last monday when I went for something to cure this rotten mouth misery.

Composed myself to say, I'm concerned about the candida you mention as I've just come back from seeing a specialist with my recurring thrush in my mouth, sore and split tongue. He's given me Fluconazole 50mg per day for 2 weeks. Got to have blood tests done for underlying problems and go back in a month. It almost killed me going there on my own so far to walk and the pathology dept was closed at weekends so got to go again on a 30 mile round trip for bloods as they said have to go back there for them.

I am wondering if I'm getting sclerderma too.God forbid NO!

Hardly slept last night , just got up to read this at 12.30 pm

don't know if you can view this but here is a photo of June when she was ok. She is the one in the middle.

I bought 4 pineapples yesterday at Aldi as they were 69p each haha. xxx

Sorry i didn't mean to spill all that out, but it just brought it all back. xxx

Ah Plumcake, so sorry to have upset you, sending lots of love and blessings your way... and thank you so much for your honesty and openess.... I had a look at your photo - she looks a bundle of fun there! ;)

ew in relation to your hospital trip this weekend ! and you know it is so important to rest and get enough sleep to allow your body to heal from this autoimmune curve ball ! I am very rigid with my sleep pattern, I make sure I have a minimum of 8 hours per night, and if not sleeping, just being horizontal, as if I dont, I find the challenges (eg just standing up for a second) of the forthcoming day even more difficult.

I tried amitryptiline back in the day (prob 15 years ago now) to restore my sleeping pattern, but soon got myself off it once the pattern had been restored ! Didnt like the extra extra dry mouth and the mind fog !

ooo pineapples 69p... thanks for that! they are £1 in morrisons and tesco !

I will friend request you on fb - if thats ok ? my photo is of me holding my dog with my sister holding my mums dog !

Also - I set up a blog last autumn, of inspirational quotes and phrases which I have found to be uplifting especially on those ever so frequent looking for the rainbow days, if you would like to check it out .... cosmicfairy444.blogspot.co.uk

I take each day at a time, being conscious to keep my inner dialogue positive, as I really believe there is a mind / body / spirit connection to well being and disease ! and if I am thinking negative stuff my body tends to go in to shut down even more, so my mission for 2013 is 'I want to feel good', and so if it makes me feel good, I do it, if not, I dont !

obviously attending all of the medical appointments which this diagnosis brings with it, does not necessarily make me feel good as I would much rather go to 1000 other places than have to go for more appointments, but I have tried to change this around, in that I feel very blessed to be under the care and supervision of such medical experts, helping me return to my path of well being... The last few appointments, I have been rocking up with cupcakes, which I have made, and have become a self confessed master at, since the Raynauds has put me housebound when it is cold ! I even took one to the car parking token team at the hospital and they were overjoyed !

So I have a baking mission to keep me distracted this afternoon, as this week is taken up with 3 days of medical appointments and a trip to the dentist ! wehoo living the dream :)

Hi Im very sorry I haven't got back toy ou, not to worry, you didn;t upset me too bad. But it brought it all back rather, gone off now. I've been very poorly and I can't type much cos my fingers have swollen very badly and painful.

I need to get a Vit D blood test, my holistic therapist who I can see 6 times on the NHS now wasted two appts, asked for it, as that can be a big factor with depression and immune system, I was refused saying that if we go out we're expected to be ok with Vit d. Absolute rot. The lousy summer and long winter which still hasn't gone is likely to be the reason, no sun!

And since i asked for my bloods to be printed out I discover that my VIT D was low last Set. but was not told this. So it's bound to be lower still now.

Also refused a blood test for Sjogren;s "maybe later" she said. WHY? cos they have a budget to keep to and they are charging 0844 prices on their phone number, banned by government, but they still use it. Swines.

Sorry have to stop ranting and rest the hands.,

Cheers living the dream :)

Ah Plumcake - Hiya !

oooo doesnt sound too good for you .... can you change your medical advisers ?

I had a gruesome experience when I was first diagnosed thanks to the Consultant, so I red carded him and got myself to the real experts and professionals - Prof Denton and his team at The Royal Free. I have not looked back since and thank my blessings each day that I am under the care of a team that not only know what they are doing, but actually care and want to do their best to get me better !

In the meantime, go easy on yourself and affirm that 'all is well and only good will come out of this' to yourself each day, and watch things change .... Louise Hay told me this...

I get acheing and more pain in my fingers if I sepnd too much time on the keyboard, which is a frustration as I havent been out for over 2 weeks and so the internet is my bbf haha !

I hope you are feeling a bit better today.... love and best wishes, Living the dream :) xx

Oh dear, I clicked to see where you live, and lost my typing. Bother!! lol Not the word I really blurted out. I should have made a word doc. first.

In answer to your question to change my GP. I cannot, already changed to the only other one available round here, from the really bad one who shouldn't be practising.

Got to see a great fella who got the bloods done, but he's left, so left with a young woman who just quotes things like "If you go out your Vit D levels is expected to be fine,"

And no you can't have a blood test for sjogrens, maybe next time. It';s money money money, worrying over their budget.

They would rather treat the symptoms than the find out the cause.

Louise Hay, isn't she the lady who wrote some books on healing yourself?

I think I have a book by her, but not sure where it is.

I also have 3 booklets by Vera Riley Stepping Stones to Positive Living, Positive Living A 31 day Help Yourself guide. and The Way Ahead.

I bought these while i was at a yoga holiday in 1987. Read them and thought Yeah right! but will attempt to read them again and see what my views are NOW!
