Saliva glands

Hi, I have limited scleroderma and Raynaud's. Dec 2010 I had my submandular glands out because of infections in my saliva glands. Looks like I wil prob have to have the other side taken out for the same reasons. Has anyone else had this problem with saliva glands?

Hello, I have Scleroderma, Raynaud's and Sjogren's syndrome, with very dry eyes and mouth, I regularly attend Leeds Dental Hospital, who have prescribed Pilocarpine Tabs which are heplful, as well as various sprays, gels etc.. I also have a scan of the glands every 2 years. They always tell me that if I have any swelling/pain in the glands I am to contact them immediately. I didn't realise that this could be as serious to involve surgery.

Hi Yorky, had an ultra sound of neck today and it has shown that my left submandular saliva gland is not draining properly and is repeatedly getting infected.Doc said this is due to Scleroderma. I have to see Maxillo Facial consultant next week.Pretty sure they will operate and remove this gland as well.

neck very swollen today and hearing in my left ear muffled.I've had more problems with this gland than I did with the right hand one.

i have the same problem with both ears and neck but the right one has been the one most badly affected, you know one doctor even commented on it, saying it was the altitude of where i lived and not being used to it, so am not surprised to hear other peoples problems are the same and am not going mad.

Hi Jeanette, have you had any saliva glands removed? It's amazing the random comments that people make about R&S!

I have Sjogrens Syndrome and have just been prescribed Pilocarpine Tabs as I have swelling when I eat in my Parotid Gland.(left side). My Consultant at the Dental Hospital had said it is because the glands are not draining properly and wants to try these tablets to help produce more saliva !!! I have to take one for two days, two for two days then increase to three. I have taken one tonight and started sweating - he did warn me about this but I did not imagine it would be this bad - dont think I can cope with three a day!!!!! I am going to have another scan of the neck to see if there are any changes in the glands from last time. If this does not work he will be speaking to their surgeons to see if they can enlarge the salivery glands???? But apparently this will be difficult .....

My submandular glands have been my problem-but i've had the left side operated on yesterday and removed (I had my right hand one removed in Dec 2010) I have not heard of saliva glands being enlarged.that was never discussed with my consultant. I was glad to get rid of this gland as i was feeling mighty poorly at times with recurrent infections.

The tablets you were asked to take sound horrible.I really hope you get some better results after your scan as i know how miserable it can make you feel

take care
