Further to my Post on the Lupus forum (link below) can I ask for recommendations for suitable super warm gloves and socks please?
I spent a fortune on some silver lined socks and gloves and found them to be absolutely useless. My M&S bought socks are better than the extortionate silver lined ones.
I find that the silver gloves and socks work best as a base layer. Merino wool socks are my favourite. Darn Tough are a good brand. As for gloves it depends on how much dexterity you need whilst out and about. Sheepskin mittens are great but dexterity is limited whilst wearing the. Climbing gloves can be pretty good. I used these when my kids were in the pram as they are wind proof and wind chill is a major Raynauds trigger for me. Some people swear by the battery heated gloves but I find them cumbersome.
Thanks Midgebite. The merino ones seem popular. And when I'm out dexterity is not needed at all. All I need is pure and utter heat so also going to buy the heated gloves 😁
Woolie Boolie wool cycling socks are great. I am yet to find decent gloves that leave you with some dexterity though. I wear two pairs of normal gloves if I need to do anything, and sheepskin gloves if I don't.
Thanks Tiggywoos. Mrs Surferguy (Although she doesn't surf... Or swim) gets a discount at MW so should help a bit. She's looking at them as I type this to you. 😄
Thanks Babette. I have the ski gloves from when life was good and I didn't have this horrible disease so was able to hit the slopes. I also tried my ski socks but the material catches the broken skin on my toes so not at all good.
If you buy ski sock, if you have cracked skin, just double check the material. My material catches and also irritates that area. Super painful when you pul the socks on hard! Ouch!!!
I use layers as I have very delicate skin and often have digital ulcers. Socks..I wear a base layer of bamboo and when needed I have just invested in some alpaca socks which are great..not too thick but warm n cosy.Gloves..I wear silk gloves as the base layer. I have rechargeable hand warmers in my pockets and I usually pop my hands in my pockets or hold them in my hands. I have tried mittens over the top of my silk base layer but they all make me too clumsy. I have a muff too which is great to use at home.
I also wear wrist warmers and legwarmers to plug the gaps..any draft on my body sets me off it seems.
Thanks for the tips Krazykat. Bamboo socks you say? Brilliant, they'll match my bamboo filled bathroom 😂
But seriously, will look into these and the rechargeable hand warmers. The latter have been recommendee by a lot of people. I also find hands in my arm pits help. Weird I know but it's a double win. It warms the hands and alleviates the pain.
For gloves I’ve found that putting medical gloves on (the thin plastic ones) underneath normal wool gloves really help. It’s good if you need to use your hands a lot whilst on a walk and I change mine when they start getting stretched
Thanks Mellor. Unfortunately my hands are too sore for anything too tight to the skin. But I'm going to buy some more cotton gloves and cut the tips off 😁
Hi Guys, if anyone's looking to buy new socks or gloves, my lovely wife went to mountain warehouse this afternoon and picked up some merino exlorer socks for me. And they currently have a top sale on. These socks are currently on half price sale. Originally £19.99. On sale for £9.99. But after speaking to the guy in the shop to ask suitability and warmth levels, he gave her another 20% off. She came home and realised she should've bought
