Painful to stand in shower - does anyone wear flips flops etc in shower to help?

Hi, it has become increasingly painful to stand in the shower due to no padding on my feet and not being able to see the chiropodist due to shielding at present. I'm looking into buying something to wear on my feet in the shower such as flips flops/shower shoes and was wondering if anyone had tried anything or had any recommendations? Thanks for your help.

Hi I totally sympathise. I need a chiropidist also at the moment but its not going to happen any time soon. It usually happens when the raynauds is attacking my feet and toes which is most of the time unless its above 25 degrees. A podiatrist gave me some insoles which she cut out of three different thicknesses of foam type stuff. They do give some comfort in my shoes if I can get them and my feet into them. Really struggling to walk comfortably at the moment which is a concern.

What about a padded non slip shower mat? It would provide some padding for your feet, but you would still able to keep them open to the water for cleaning, and also the safety of a non slip surface to stand on?

If you want shoes then again, rubber non slip shoes...I wouldn't wear anything like flip flops. you are in danger of trips and slips.

Alternatively, depending on the size of your shower you could have a shower stool, or get a wall mounted shower seat fitted so you didn't have to stand at all.

There is a website that provides lots of advice on managing daily tasks and provides details of what equipment is available.

Hi, so sorry you are having this problem. I used to have more problems when I used a bath, but getting a wet room actually helped (rather a drastic solution and probably not guaranteed to help). I used to use a luxury bath mat (one that is from a well known shop that has several price levels, instead of just called luxury - I got caught with that but my husband persisted). If removing cold contact would help I had some success with swim socks (probably Speedo's) but then your feet don't really get washed. I alway leave footwear on until the last moment and always have a thick bathmat or thick towel to stand on as soon as I've finished, then straight into some snuggly towelling mules as soon as possible (which also help dry the feet).

I've seen a set of shower shoes but the "one size trips all" :O) put me off. I have not investigated these properly as I'm lucky enough not to need anything like that at the moment.

I hope you find some ways of helping yourself quickly. Take care and keep safe. xx

I have a wet room shower also a seat but still wear my crocs for showering I have several pairs which I wear 24/7 I find them really comfortable.

Hi, I have the same issue and have tried a padded shower mat. I have yet to find a mat with enough padding to feel comfortable and feel like flip flops are too slippery in the shower.

Do you know what caused the loss of padding in your feet? I'm still trying to figure out what caused mine and don't yet have any explanation.

No additional suggestions on what to wear, but am curious as to the loss of fat pad. Do you have that on your hands or other body areas as well. I am losing subcutaneous mass (fat pads) in my hands and feet and my skin is thinning in other body regions (including my face), without loss in total body weight. I have Sjogren's, but have not been diagnosed with any other AI disorder. I just have not seen a lot of references to the fat pad loss.

Hi I too have know fat pads on my feet so I feel your pain. I think a Podiatrist is the way to go to get some innersoles made for your shoes oh and slippers too. Thanks for the tip about flip flops in the shower now why didn’t I think of that or a beach sandals that is waterproof. I ware these for swimming at the pool because it’s too painful to walk without anything on my feet. Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks for all of your replies, very helpful and it's good to talk to other people with similar problems. I hadn't thought of a padded bath mat so will look into that. The reason for the loss of fatty padding on my feet is due to my medical conditions as I have Raynauds and Diffuse Systemic Sclerosis. It also causes tightening of the skin due to the extra collagen, so I have 'claw' toes. Hope this helps but happy to answer any questions if I can. Take care everyone.

Forgot to mention, that I have specialist shoes and boots made by the appliance department at my local hospital who my rheumatologist referred me to. I have insoles made for me, which I believe are similar to those for a diabetic as they are softer on your feet. They do make a difference just wish I could wear them in the shower!! :-)

Yes, I also have the same issue. The shoes of my feet are now thick and slippery. I find bathmats uncomfortable underfoot but cannot think of another way of doing it as I don't think flip-flops are nonslip top and bottom and I'm not sure they would offer much stability. So yes, a mat but perhaps find something that isn't too lumpy. Ax

Managed to find a bath mat on a well known online retailer that seems to do the job. Only arrived the other day so early days yet but definitely made a difference. Not bad price either x
