Methotrexate injections

Hi guys! I've not used this site for a while but wondered if anyone has any experience with methotrexate injections?

I saw my consultant yesterday and he suggested increasing my methotrexate from 15-20mg per week but also changing from tablets to the injection as he thinks this will be more effective for me.

I need to wait until I get an appointment to see a nurse to show me how to do the weekly injection. I don't think I mind as it doesn't sound too hard and apparently you lose a percentage of a drug through your gut before the drug in the tablet form gets in your blood stream.

Thanks guys, any comments would be appreciated!

Hello to you !

I was put on a 20mg dose of Methotrexate , using epi-injection weekly. I was advised to have it this way because of gastric issues. I saw my consultant after 10 weeks & it was stopped straight away as it clearly was not helping me, this was after taking Mycophenolate for 7 months previous. It was decided to go the route of chemotherapy, I have had one dose, & 2nd is due next week , I then have my other dates booked to be completed on 24th September, my main worry is........ if this does not work what then ???

I would also say that sadly, I did suffer from a couple of days sickness after my Methotrexate jabs, so I hope you will not suffer with that.

Good Luck & Best Wishes X

Hello there, if you are already tolerating MTX in tablet form, then it is highly likely that you will be absolutely fine with the injection. It is a much more effective form of getting the MTX into your system without dramatically increasing the dose. The 'pen' they use (called metoject) is safe and easy to use. Much nicer than taking the tablets in my experience, and from most people I have spoken to who are on it.

All my best

Hi Scotgirl: I have to ditto both replies from Lucy and Polly. I do not inject into my tummy and I watched the YouTube videos on how to inject properly. I've felt no side effects except following the first injection. I was listless, but since then have no issues at all (other than I feel much better than when I was taking the 15mg orally)...

All the best!

I've been using Methotrexate injections for about 2 years now. Wanted to take injections as I'm on that many tablets I just didn't want to take any more. I've had no side affects at all from it and it's easy to inject yourself. I just wish I could have all my tablets made into a once a week injection. 😀
