intraperitoneal treatment
IP chemo is OK did 8 rounds, my doc says adds 3 yrs to life. Only issue was in the beginning didn't stop them from filling up my belly with saline after I learned I could let them put 300 mm in then chemo then 300 afterwards. It's cake . I did cysplatin twice had trouble that's extremely aggressive chemo. Then switched to carboplatin and did the have to stay 3 days Iin hospital. Carboplatin you can go home. I was diagnosed with stage 3c clear cell ovarian cancer in 2014. No recurring to date. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Best wishes
IP port is attached to rib cage for chemotherapy to go directly into stomach cavity. You will still get chemo in your arms.
So after insertion of fluids, do they remove them or what?
All the best eileen
No unfortunately this is the uncomfortable part it takes about 3 days and it basically obsiorbs into your body. It's not painful just bloats you. It's worth it. It adds 3 yrs to your life. No brainier . I was very nervous I didn't have this site. No one I could talk with. You should do this don't wait. After surgery usually need 8 weeks to heal to start chemo wash. Wash started exactly 8 weeks after second major surgery for me. I usually took a lorazepam 1 mg. On my way to keep me relaxed. After first time I new what to expect and I was fine
Faith1962, Both IV chemo and IP chemo use ports. While some women are not offered a port for IV chemo, I strongly suggest PORTS for ALL chemo. Intraperitoneal Chemo is very, very effective.
I had IV chemo of carboplatin and paclitaxel via port for four months, then debulking surgery to R-0, immediately followed by two rounds intraperitoneal chemo of cisplatin and paclitaxel via abdominal port in hospital, followed by 18 weeks dose dense (weekly) carbo/taxol. I would do it all over again without hesitation.
Staying hydrated is VERY important. There are many electrolyte solutions you can drink. I am 8 months NED from it all. I feel fantastic. I never thought I would get my life back, but I have. We all know the recurrence rate for this disease is high. There are many women who have LONG periods of remission, especially when IP chemo has been used. I am grateful I did this. It was not a bad experience. I am grateful to be here now to encourage you and help to calm other's fears and anxieties. All the very best to you my dear. Tesla
i was worry about side effects from the intraperitoneal chemo. thank you
The only side effect I had was my stomach felt bloated. I had a port for stomach wash. No port for regular troxil chemo. And definitely no pick line. Ports you can swim etc. Pick lines you can't. I have horses and do a lot of lifting. I opted only a port for stomach wash. They will try to give you a full liter of saline solution. I work out and it was too much fluid for me. I lost my hair it's back now. I opted no wigs I'm a cowgirl and I wore baseball caps all summer. Doc gave me lorazepam for nausea and anxiety. Prior to my chemo I would take one. It would calm me. It's scary when you don't know what to expect. Feel free to write me any time. I didn't work through chemotherapy. I know people who have breast cancer they did . Troxil alone was no issue. But ovarian cancer people seem to receive different chemotherapy. I also learned a trick, eventually your immune system might get low and if they give you a booster shot. I took claritan day of and for 5 days after. But can't have the one with the D in it. Just claritan. Talk to nurses. It works and keeps joint pain down to minimal. You will be surprised. It's not bad at all.
I had this treatment simultaneously with infusion through a chest port from which side effects were no different. Getting The infusion, however, was an acrobatic exercise, having to turn from side to side to even out the liquid input.
I hope this is helpful and wish you well!
