Multi-vitamins? What brand?

Hi everyone! For those of you who take multi-vitamins, what brand do you take? I am looking for a new one. The one I used to take added fish oil and I can't have that. I prefer non-GMO. Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

For what it's worth, I've had consultations with the Integrative Oncologist at UCSF and he doesn't recommend multi vitamins. He favors vitamin D in moderation, omega-3/fish oil, and is also positive on mushroom blends. His preference is that you get the equivalent of multi-vitamins from your diet.

Hi

Yup I agree with HelenWi....my oncologist has repeatedly told me to NOT take any supplements or OTC meds/pain killers that she hasn't prescribed.

I take a calcium/D3 combo daily that she recommended. I get Zometa IV every 3 months and have extensive bone mets so the supplements in this case are assisting to the processes of the treatments.

Anything extra has to be processed in the body and can put an additional strain on our already loaded systems...and can actually be damaging to liver function.

I eat lots of veg ....mushrooms most mornings for breakfast....I really like them!! On top of avo toast....yum!

I'm 3yrs since diagnosis and stable.

Wishing you all the best!

Zoe

Oh...also something I just found out recently....Some supplements can actually stimulate and/or simulate estrogen production.

Since in most cases our cancer is estrogen positive this is not good!

2 of my treatments are estrogen blocking so I wouldn't want to give myself any assistance in making it!

I found this to be the case with some types of mushroom extracts...maitake and shitake and lions mane are a few and also some things like ginger and tumeric also...

So please be careful.

My oncologist told me years ago not to take vitamins. The only one he recommends is Vit D. I never take anything without consulting with him first. I try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The Registered Dietician at my cancer center advised I get my nutrition from my diet. As an example she recommended Turmeric Tea but not Turmeric Supplements. During a presentation I watched, a cancer researcher said not only do supplements not cure cancer, they may actually help cancer cells to grow and thrive. My care team doesn’t recommend supplements unless there is a medical need, such as vitamin D deficiency, uncovered during a blood test.

I take Centrium silver minis for women 50+. You take two and they are smaller and easy to swallow.

I like Rainbow Light Womens over 50, or Alive Natures Way Women's over 50 . It is important to have a daily multi vitamin that does not contain iron, for women who are no longer having a monthly period. The food sources we have today including organic foods don't have the level of nutrients/ vitamins needed. You may have to eat 10-12 plates of food to reach your necessary optimal levels . I am in touch with 2 Integrative Drs. that advise me. I think you should have a blood, and urine analysis testing to determine your vitamin/supplement levels. I had blood, and urine testing done many years ago. I thought I was taking the proper amount of vitamin, and supplements, and that I was very healthy The testing revealed. I had high levels of some vitamins/supplements, and low levels of other vitamins/supplements. After taking a custom level of supplements, 6 months later all of my vitamin/supplement levels were at optimal .😇

i take Garden of Life, Vitamin Code 50 & Wiser Women or My Kind Organics Women 55+. i've been a plant based eater for 40 years. i do my breast to get nutrients from food, however, the quality of our food has been diminished. i have been taking supplements for years; they are adjusted as needed. a few years ago, an integrative cancer & metabolic nutrition DO added some supplements based on 'in depth' lab work. now, i'm working with a functional medicine nutritionist who is recommending additional supplements based on the GI Map and Dutch tests. hormones and the gut are affected by treatment. hormones need to be balanced, and the gut needs to be in homeostasis. food and supplements assist with it.

initial dx, Oct 2011. mbc dx with pleural effusion, July 2015. stable and NEAD since (March) 2016.
