I have a consult with radiation oncologist on Wednesday and wanted to ask if any of you have had very targeted radiation therapy to one small new spot on bone when your systemic treatment (Ibrance and Letrozole) is still working on other mets. I saw there is SBRT and IMRT. Are these appropriate options? Please let me know if anyone has done a radiation treatment for an isolated bone spot. --Trish

New bone met
I had radiation on my spine, two sessions. It zapped it right out, a little over a year ago. I’m on Ibrance 100 and anastrozole. Now in my lasts scans it showed up in both of my kidneys. I see the oncologist in a few weeks and talked to him last week and they are going to schedule me for the same thing on my kidneys. Hugs!
Thats awesome! 2 sessions. And you stayed on the same treatment regimen? Do you know what type of radiation? SBRT?
I started with metastatic breast cancer in 2018. Discovered it within a year after a clear mammogram. Doctor said it was a fast growing cancer and put me on Ibrance and letrozole for 3 years till it stopped working and cancer moved into my bones. Then he started me on Verzenio and Fulvestrant for 2 more years. It worked till it stopped and moved on into liver. The Ibrance and Verzenio are pill form and I found taking an Imodium every morning with morning pills and every evening with evening pills, plus once in a while through the day depending on what I ate that day, helped keep diarrhea better controlled. Am now taking Paclitaxil chemo infusion 3 weeks on and 1 week off. First chemo wiped out my white blood cells. Trying to adjust to the chemo. Bloodwork tomorrow. Will see how it is doing. Had hip pain and specific radiation on each hip twice as pain returns. Both doctors are great, With being metastatic when diagnosed, I am happy to keep going. This was long, but maybe a little something in my story might be of help to you.
I was interested to learn that they were able to give you radiation twice in the same area? Is that right?
I'm having a PET scan at MD Anderson due to a new spot on my anterior 2nd rib. Hoping they can radiate it even though I had radiation in the same area before but not directly on the rib.
The new spot is on the other femur... close to hip joint. For your new spot they may be able to use SBRT to target the spot since the prior radiation was not directly on it. But my understanding is that you can have radiation therapy in same area again as it has had a long enough healing time. And repeats are limited so as not to permanently damage bone.
Hi I’m based in the north east of the uk and I had a progression on my sternum and I had one blast of radiotherapy. It was electron beam therapy.
I was told it would ease the pain I was beginning to experience and also possibly maintain the growth, beginning of august , to date I m not having any more discomfort in that area .
I have mbc in liver ,sternum ,lymph and L1 of vertebrae
My liver mets had progressed also so I was taken off ibrance and letroazole and given Eveolymus and Exemestane
Experiencing many side effects but don’t know how well it’s working until my next scan
Hope this help a little
Hi, yes I had 1 SBRT session on my spine last September. Also have mets to other bones, liver, and lungs. I was on Letrozole and Ibrance, at the time and still am. Latest scan in July this year shows everything stable at the moment. Hope your consultation goes well on Wednesday.
Hi Trissh - I had targeted radiation to my left Iliac bone when a small tumor showed up while I was on Ibrance and Letrozole.
Can I have this radiation on front of my shoulder, the clavicle? I’ve had bc radiation in past
I had this done over four years ago on the one met that I have. It was done to my hip with three very pinpointed treatments. I will share that either with that or a shot that hit my sciatic nerve, I ended up with foot drop. The good news though...blasted the cancer away!
I had target radiation to a spot on my spine and it did give me relief. Theresa
Hi Trissh,
Just a note of caution. I did not realize that the amount of radiation you receive does affect the body's ability to produce white blood cells. Because I had several bone spots radiated , my white count tends to go lower on chemo than others. I can’t receive the full dose because of low counts. Never had a problem with counts prior to my last radiation to my hip. I asked my oncologist if that will improve over time. He said no.
He said it is a risk vs. benefit decision. If your pain is very bad, do it. If not, I would hold off.
Ask radiologist about it.
Yes, to my hip tumors. Trying to alleviate pain. I kept on my ibrance and anastrozole.
It was not effective for me, I ended up, 3 months later getting a hip replacement.
That was April 2021. It was a good move.
Good luck
I stayed on those two drugs for three years until it stopped working -don’t be eager to quit them. I’ve never been offered radiation for any bone met. I’m on xeloda and it’s working. My tumor markers down 4 times. I wish you find out the radiation treatment🙏✝️.
I had SBRT done twice for singular mets. The first time was 5 treatments for a met on my ischium, the second was 5 treatments for a met on the sacrum. Both times the treatments went well. They do a mapping of the area first using CT to make sure they just target the met and don't harm healthy tissue. My radiation oncologist was awesome! Each treatment was only about 20 minutes or so and I did not have issues afterward. Neither spot has resurfaced so I guess this worked. Best wishes to you. Sending you hugs and prayers.
I wish you success with your treatment!
I had palliative radio to my t9 in Jan 2020. Pet scans do not show metabolic uptake though area still hurts - not like before though. On the 6th September I have my 6 monthly Pet scan.
I had one lesion on my spine and I got Cyberknife which is a targeted radiation treatment in 2019 . It been scelerotic since (stable )
