hi I had a recent ct scan which showed good response to my chemo for my cancer and my bones are healing and liver is so small and subtle and remains unchanged but just found something on ct scan that consultant didn’t even mention it say the following lung change mosaic ground glass attenuation (However the phase is quite expiratory) but no pulmonary mass or nodules no pleural or pericardial effusions no pe found what’s this mean should I be worried

if your onc didn’t mention it’s something to worry about, I wouldn’t. I’ve been dancing with MBC for six and a half years and radiologists always find some kind of strange little thing and then it might never be mentioned again. Lungs often show small leftovers from colds or inflammation. The docs will tell you if it’s something to worry about.

Good luck to you! Kate

Hello! I went down the rabbit hole looking for some simplified meaning in that "ground glass attenuation"...and every definition or explanation led me deeper into medical talk. If your ONC hasn't brought it up, it may very well be nothing to worry about...

This is the easiest explanation i found though it is called an "opacity" instead of attenuation:

Ground-glass opacity (GGO) is a finding seen on chest x-ray (radiograph) or computed tomography (CT) imaging of the lungs. It is typically defined as an area of hazy opacification (x-ray) or increased attenuation (CT) due to air displacement by fluid, airway collapse, fibrosis, or a neoplastic process.

So, you must have some differences in your lung tissue that are showing up... the word attenuation is defined as : Attenuation is the reduction of the intensity of an x-ray beam as it traverses matter. The reduction may be caused by absorption or by deflection (scatter) of photons from the beam and can be affected by different factors such as beam energy and atomic number of the absorber.

Again, until they tell you it must be addressed, I would think the best thing is to not worry...easier said, than done, Im afraid.

Best wishes...hang in there!

Hi. I had this show up in a scan and was told it could be remnants of a chest infection or covid. I hadn’t had any symptoms of either, was told not to worry but of course you do. On my next scan 3 months later it had all gone so I’m sure yours will probably do the same.

hi Sharonpat - it is frustrating sometimes. I get reports after consult and thrn have to wait 3 mths to ask what it means. Every one of my 3mth scans highlights a new variation - slight lingular atelectasis , air in bladder, deep posterior pelvic trace fluid - which are then not mentioned 3 mths later. Have learnt to be curious but disregard unless it’s mentioned successively. The mri one last time said possible early signs of spread which has doubled my annual travel insurance - 580 to 1280!

I have some “ground glass” notes too. Have you had COVID? I have had and gg is apparently a leftover from that. My pulmonologist wasn’t concerned, which is why he didn’t mention it. It did give me a chance to tell him I had COVID in Jan ‘22.
