Celebrex for joint inflammation pain?

Quite by accident, I took some Celebrex for a couple days when my joint pain was really bad. It is amazing to me how much more effective this has been than my usual ibuprofen and or Tylenol. So I’m wondering if anyone else has used Celebrex. I see my doctor today so we’ll pose this question to her because it’s really made a difference for me. I hate taking these meds and I want to take the ones that do the least damage to my organs but keep me out of pain

I have never been prescribed Celebrex but I do know that many medications depending on dosage can be used for various reasons. I used to get prescribed seroquel for my severe insomnia issues. I then read that in much higher dosages, that seroquel is also used to treat with with bipolar issues. I am given gabapentin for my nerve pain bc although I am on fentanyl and oxycodone (for pain from the cancer being in my spine), it does not help at all my nerve pain. I found the below on a medical site online.

"Does Celebrex help cancer pain?

“When a tumor invades bone, nerves or organs, it can cause inflammation, which can be painful,” Osuagwu says. Taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like Celebrex or meloxicam can offer relief."

Goes without saying though, to speak to your oncologist about this and see what they say.

I use Celebrex and Tylenol. Swap off as needed. I also like Advil. I look to see what med is processed in my kidney or liver and keep an eye on blood test monthly.

I use Celebrex for inflammation and it works quickly and effectively.

I am a former drug rep for pfizer and sold celebrex so pardon me… I have used celebrex for years for aches and pains and now daily for cancer pain. It is a Cox 2 inhibitor which means it is safer than older NSAIDS for protecting against ulcers. . You do have to take it daily for 3 days to get to steady state for maximum benefit… so it is meant to be taken daily rather than hear and there.

My doctor is considering this drug for me. Do you know if there are any alcohol interactions? I've read mixed opinions. Thanks

I’m really limiting my alcohol now as we all may need our liver to process the NEXT drug that our doc provides us. But for years prior to MBC while on celebrex, thst was not a concern for me.

Hi- I take Meloxicam - in your "rep" experience, do you know if celebrex is safer than meloxicam on the stomach? Thanks for your opinion!

From what we were taught-Celebrex because it is a Cox 2 inhibitor is safer in your stomach. “Celebrex is different from Mobic and other NSAIDs in that it causes less inflammation and ulceration of the stomach and intestine (at least with short-term use) and does not interfere with the clotting of blood.”

I've been on Celebrex for years! Way before cancer diagnosis. It was prescribed for arthritis pain in my wrist after I injured it in a fall (up dunes on Oregon coast). When I've been told to stop it before some test or procedure (I forget exactly why), pain came back within 24 hours. I take just one a day. None of my doctors have ever suggested I stop using it.

Me too! I take it just once per day for years even before MBC. That is my baseline

I have also been taking meloxicam way before my cancer dx. I find it helps a great deal, but there are still days that even though I take the medicine and I walk 2-3 miles every day, there will still be some pain, especially in my hip area. On those days I also take Tylenol as needed. My doc has no issue with it.

Me too. I’m also quite active and on those days I will take Tylenol too. They are process through different pathways so that is not a problem. Keep doing all you can do!

I LOVE my Celebrex! I was on it before being diagnosed metastatic. I take 200mg twice a day everyday. I have degenerative joint disease in many areas, when these joints get extra sore I get cortisone shots from the Orthopedist. 2 yrs ago I had a big Clot in my heart and I'll skip all that involved but as a result I was put on an anticoagulant Eliquis, the Cardiologist said I would have to come off the Celebrex forever. My pain levels shot thru the roof, I begged to have the Celebrex back, finally my Onc intervened and I got it back based on QOL. I am still not to take any other NSAID for pain, only Tylenol is allowed. There's even a few studies out there that propose the Cox-2 inhibitors reduce an inflammatory route that can increase cancer risk!

I have mets to my spine and fortunately no specific pain there, just an overall "skeletal" stiffness which I attribute to exemestane and Ibrance. In chatting one day with my oncologist he suggested Cymbalta. I started it and I still have occasional stiffness but thought it might be when I slack off on my stretches and movement. Has anyone any information on Cymbalta vs. Celebrex?

Flavia 100, I am curious to see what your oncologist says to you at your visit.

thanks for bringing up this topic. have a beautiful day.

Eyebeleive- I didn’t know that cymbalta was used for pain… I looked it up… indicated for nerve pain like in diabetic neuropathy. Interesting. Glad it is giving you some relief. I am stiff too also on exemestane! Celebrex working for me!

I took Celebrex for years for my arthritis pain. My son who is an orthopedic said it is the least harmful pain medication to your kidneys. I no longer take it 🤐 as my kidneys are borderline.
