Nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging scan results

Couldn't go near young children or pregnant ladies for 24 hrs after scan. Got results today. Breast cancer has spread and have secondary cancer in bones. Soon going to have denosumab/zoledronic acid./ibandronate/pamidronate. Infusions. Have to have dentist take 2 teeth out first otherwise bad teeth can cause osteoporosis and cause the jaw to break. New field of treatment for me, has anyone had this please?

So exemestane alone didn’t do anything for you

No it seems I have to wait for another 4 weeks and if it hasn't worked by then they will try another one, can't have chemo as I am not well enough with heart condition. X

Hello Peskyone,

I also have to have surgery on a tooth to remove an instrument that was left behind in 2014, would’ve never known if the Onc didn’t ask me to get an all clear from the dentist. Now I have to get that done before starting denosumab.

Not sure I can be helpful, because I have a related question. I had bone mets, and doc tried denosumab. I couldn't tolerate it, so I have been getting Xgeva. The problem is that my dentist just boom, pulled a back tooth that he said was loose. I said I couldn't have oral surgery because of my cancer meds. He claimed to know all about it and pulled the tooth.

My oncologist said that was wrong, and she had to withhold the Xgeva for another 3 months. She sent me to an oncology dentist (who knew?) . She said I have to stay off the Xgeva. Somehow in helping with the bone mets, it disrupts osteoblast/osteoIclast cycle, and -- this is the part I don't understand -- it mostly affects the jaw and teeth. I have bone loss near the root of two other teeth and could lose them, too. But they can't be pulled. I don't know what can be done. For now she has given me special mouth wash. Where he pulled the tooth also hasn't healed after three months.

I guess I should have posted this elsewhere. I want to go back on the Xgeva because my many old bone mets healed, but I have a new one, and I guess that was helping.

But yes, there is some connection between the treatments for bone metastases, which are the same treatments given for osteoporosis but at a much higher dose, and problems with teeth and jaws, and it is pretty mysterious to me.

Thank you for your experience. They won't give me treatment until I have teeth pulled but having to wait for appointment. Its hard trying to do the best and not getting anywhere.

I have had problems like that. The doc should be able to get them to make an emergency appointment for you. My oncologist mostly doesn't do that for me, but I turn to my primary doc. My rheumatologist is the best. Well connected and willing to go to bat for me. He doesn't think I should have to wait. And you shouldn't have to wait to start cancer treatment because you need teeth pulled! Someone with clout needs to help you here. I hope you can find that person, who will make the case that your treatment should not be delayed. It is not as though you need a specialist to pull teeth. It is basic dentistry, I gather.

Hi, out of your meds mentioned I have Denosumab. I had a full check up prior to starting treatment but 3 months into having the injection I had to have a tooth extracted. Some silly nurse then gave me an injection a week later causing Osteonecrosis. 19 months on and I still have a tooth socket hole in my gum. It’s all in the past now but one thing I will say is if you need more dental treatment after you start Denosumab check out the medicine holiday before having it done. Wishing you all the best.
