Hello :) I am 66 years old and have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer following my routine mammogram .I am HER2- PR0/8 but ER4/8 .I have had biopsy wide local excision and sentinel node biopsy (nodes were clear and cancer removed with clear margins )but I was told last week that they found another different cancer in the same breast ,so now looking at 5 months worth of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy and then hormone manipulation .I am feeling a bit lost at the moment and would love to hear some positive outcomes from ladies who have had the same diagnosis .Many thanks x

Welcome - but that's a bit of cold comfort! Sounds like you have some boring treatment ahead, but DO rely on your gut instinct. Doctors today are paying more attention to patients, but if you feel something isn't what you expect, it might help you to look at my website aftercancers.com where I list possible side effects and how to deal with them according to clinical trials. Good luck

Cherrylann, if you don't mind me asking, how was the second cancer detected. I always worry something is missed.

Good morning Jack :) the second cancer was discovered when they did the wide local excision ,they had an idea that something wasn't quite right as there was a 6mm area of calcification which turned out to be grade 2 invasive ductal cancer.I didn't know I had breast cancer at all ,I had no lumps nipple changes dimpling ect it was purely good luck that I went for my routine mammogram x

Thanks for the reply. I had a similar calcification picked up on mammogram 18 months after my first cancer, but mine was in the opposite breast. I was shocked at the time but now totally grateful we have technology to pick it up at these early stages. I am also in my sixties and my calcification was invasive and 8mm. It was handled with surgery three nodes removed and radiation.

My second cancer was 6mm grade 2 ER 8 PR 8 HER2 negative invasive ductal .I start chemotherapy on the 2nd August and I am feeling very low at the moment ,have an appointment in my local hospital tomorrow to discuss my treatment get bloods done ect ,I was really hoping that it would have just been radiotherapy after my op but life can throw us some curved balls at times :( I am glad you were spared the chemo Jack it doesn't sound very nice at all

Hi Cherrylann, I also was 66 at diagnosis but had Stage 1, triple negative with lumpectomy, radiation and 4 IV chemo treatments. The worst treatment for me was the first, not knowing how my body would react and what the side effects would be. To be honest, after the first I was ready to give up but the team encouraged me to take the meds for nausea even before it showed up and I found other treatments too. I added acupuncture on the 4th day to settle my stomach. It helped alot, and drank plenty of fluids. Put water in a big bottle (helps you to know how much you're drinking) and make sure you drink it to keep hydrated. Ask your nurse/nutritionist how much they recommend. Depending on the drugs used, your hair may fall out a bit later, but that didn't bother me too much, get some hats or bandanas. The hair grows back. I bought a cheap wig, but only wore it 2x. But everyone's experience is different, some people tolerate it better than others. Good luck, and know there are people who have gone through it and survived and later thrived.
