Pay attention to your nipples! They might be trying to tell you something.

I had noticed for some time that one nipple was dry and scaley, then one day I had a milky discharge - like dried oatmeal! I washed it off, but the next day, my nipple stuck to my bra and it started bleeding. I went to a walk-in clinic, and they gave me a treatment but also told me to make an appointment with my PCP. When she learned there was concern about my nipple, she took me ASAP. She scheduled a biopsy, and also a mammogram and ultrasound. The biopsy was positive for Paget Disease, and the mammo and ultra were negative. The oncologist scheduled me for an MRI, and it came out positive! Using the MRI as a guide, the hospital did an ultrasound biopsy and it came back positive for DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). I was scheduled for a simple mastectomy, and the final biopsy was clear for my margins and 5 lymph nodes. Other than a complication that led to a skin infection, I have had a complete recovery without radiation, chemo, or lymphedema. I am getting fitted for a prosthesis, and I took place in a "Team Breast Friends" fundraiser.

Thank you, Rhwright and RLN-overcomer, having lost a whole breast and coming so close to the other consequences of breast cancer, helps me understand a little better what my "breast sisters" are going through.

I agree! My nipple was definitely telling me something almost 10 years ago. It was indented. I called immediately for an appointment and that started the whole ball rolling ending up with my diagnosis and treatment for Stage III BC. Know your body, know your breasts. It's the best advice I can give to anyone. Love that yours turned out well. Wishing you continued breast health!!
