If so what are they called and what are the side effects?. Some (most) nights though it is so bad I don't care about side effects just to get a night's sleep without constant waking and jumping would be bliss.

Has anyone tried strong sleeping tablets so that you could actually sleep through RLS?
Depends what the active ingredients are for me.
I was given Ambien and had a night from hell.
Benedryl does the same thing to me. That's the active
ingredient in many of the otc sleep aids.
Does that jumping mean that your entire body jumps?
(falling off the cliff dream Jump- usually one big startling
jerk of the body) or does that mean your legs are moving
about as if they were popcorn kernels in the microwave?
I have a silly way to think about things...I've got nothing better
to do than dream up descriptions here. haha. I try really hard
to know what people are trying to describe to me.

No my entire body doesn't jump. I have all the classic symptoms of RLS but very severely, so that nearly all night long the terrible "feelings" are waking me up and I have to constantly move . Did the meds make your RLS worse or was it that they didn't suit you anyway?. I am at a loss where to turn next for relief. I wish I could get Peace

I have tried ropinirol which upset my stomach badly I'm now on Nuero patches but they don't seem to be working any more so I thought the last resort might be sleeping tablets but I don't really know if they would be any good .
Morphine helps me.
I know this is way late, but I can't be the only one who stumbles on this thread. A nice remedy to help with RLS, which I have super bad, esp on opiate withdrawal, is to first take melatonin, followed by Gabapentin (prescription) or Gabamax (OTC). Afterwards, to keep RLS from beginning, I take a hot shower before bed. Now, the one thing that actually works and keepa RLS from eventually kicking in is to wrap my legs with ace bandages from mid thighs to ankles, real tight. Yes, it does slow blood circulation, but I swear it works!! If you don't believe me, look it up or try it for yourself. I only recommend melatonin because it does speed up sleep induction, and a hot shower to make you sleepy and Gaba meds to calm you down (think of Gaba as a valium), but non narcotic and non habbit forming.
Sometimes, just wrapping my legs alone is enough, though insomnia still hits, thus melatonin amd valerian root.. And if wrapping alone dont, I take Gabamax to calm myself(since I can't get Gabapentin) and take a hot shower. Once finished, and I lay down, Im usually out within 10 minutes and sleep for 6 hrs avg... Which is better than 4 hrs broken by wakin up every hour or so...
