Any of the --ates are good.I use citrate , between 100 and 400mg depending on how I'm feeling.

Do not take magnesium near {3 hrs} Gabapentin.

Avoid the oxide version - unless you need flushing out !😝

Magnesium glycinate. It has a less laxative effect than magnesium citrate. If for your mom be aware it can cause stomach upset, nausea and vomiting.

Madlegs and I both use magnesium citrate, easy to obtain here in e.g. Holland & Barrett and similar shops, or online from solgar.co.uk/, but as Sue says some people find that the laxative effects of citrate are problematic, and in that case glycinate is preferable :

I take four capsues of New Leaf magnesium glycinate, it's widely available on line e.g. direct from NL, ebay, Amazon etc.

MY doctor and I agree with Sue J. Magnesium glycinate is also the best because it's the most easily absorbed by the body. But I can't find it in my area. I have to order it from Amazon.

I have found magnesium citrate most beneficial (having tried many different Mg preparations over the years). This form was specifically recommended by my sleep specialist at a recent appointment.
