Hi all, I need a reminder of what tests to ask to be included in iron studies for the purpose of a possible iron infusion. Thanks

Ask your doctor for a full iron panel. Stop taking any iron supplements 48 hours before the test, don't eat a heavy meat meal the night before and fast after midnight. Have your test in the morning before 9 am if possible. When you get the results, ask for your ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) numbers.

RLS-UK website sets out all the relevant info on iron therapy, including the blood tests required.

Insist they include serum ferritin. Many UK GP surgeries don't include this as part of iron tests.

I usually include Vitamin D as well. If you haven't already checked. I would include Vitamin B12, Folate plus any inflammation markers.

For inflammation has for c-reactive protein.

Ask for them to check for it. It won't be part of a normal blood test.
