Hi, I have a phone appointment in the morning with the doctor to ask for full iron blood test

Well they just do these blood test for me or am I likely to expect some resistance. I am guessing that they are not routine

I’m in the UK has anybody had any experience?

Refer the GP to NICE guidelines. Even though they're about 4 years out of date, they do mention full blood tests.

Here is some interpretation of iron test results...

Hello, did you get the blood tests? My doctor says rls is linked to low iron levels. I’ve been taking iron tablets on and off for years, I get anaemic if I don’t take them and have had several investigations as to why to no avail, but when I’m taking iron tablets it keeps my rls at bay so I definitely think it’s linked

Hi, yes I’ve just had them done this morning and get the results next week. From what I’ve read it’s the ferritin levels which need to be looked at.

This is a bit like taking an exam in the new subject. But it’s very interesting.

I am from Toronto, ON Canada.

I am meeting with my doctor in a couple of weeks. Below is what I plan to ask for.

I have made a copy of the Restless Legs - Mayo Clinic study from 2021.

This study is also available on rls.org

Every penny spent on a membership to join the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation is SO worth it.

BLOOD WORK

**Early morning blood work after Overnight Fasting

1. Total or serum iron

Recommended value for RLS patients: greater than 60 ug/dL (adults)

2. Percent iron saturation (percentage Trans Ferritin saturation)

Recommended value for RLS patients: greater than 16%

3. TIBC (Total Iron-Binding Capacity)

Recommended value for RLS patients: less than 400 ug/dL

4. Serum ferritin

Recommended value for RLS patients: minimum 100ng/mL or better (adults) but closer to 200 is better. Some RLS patients need higher than 200

I was really grateful to the advice from this forum to fast overnight and have a blood test as early as possible. This advice wasn’t given to him by the doctors.
