Restless legs and iron anaemia

Pronounced iron anaemia, but no possibility of iron infusion in Denmark. So I'm now taking iron tablets, but I'm not sure how much iron I should take? My doctor knows less about restless legs, about augmentation and how much iron in iron anaemia than I do!Will it be enough to take Amino Iron Ferrocel 50 mg every other evening? Or what about Ferro Duretter Sustained-release tablets a`100 mg ??Until now, iron supplements have been recommended 1-2 times a day. However, new research( 2023) shows that it is more beneficial to get the iron supplement every other day. The body's uptake mechanism only works every other day, shutting off further input.I'm totally at a loss, but I want to have my iron stores filled up as soon as possible. Can anyone help me?Gibbel

On the basis of a consensus of RLS experts, it is recommended that all RLS patients with serum ferritin concentration of 75 μg/L or less and transferrin saturation below 45% should receive a trial of oral iron therapy......

A common oral iron regimen is 325 mg of ferrous sulfate or 50-75 mg of ferrous bisglycinate (Gentle Iron) in combination with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C/a large glass of orange juice with each dose to enhance absorption, once every second day. Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach.

I don't know whether Ferrocel = Ferrochel which is ferrous bis-glycinate chelate; Ferro Duretter - I can only find references in Danish and can't see quickly what it contains.

Thank you very much for your reply - a great help when you have to find your way among options.

Assuming you did mean Ferrochel not ferrocel, take 2 of the 50 mg ones.

If you can afford it, you could combine a short holiday to London with a private iron infusion at the Iron Clinic in Harley Street. Professor Toby Richards treats lots of RLS patients. All you need to do is send your full blood tests and they will advise from thereon.

The cost is around £800.

Thank you very much for your answer! I have copied that option. Even a little too tired for this - but know several people in Denmark for whom it could be the solution!

You need Vit C with the iron in order to absorb it

I have been taking oral iron for years. I started with an infusion. What I have found.

Take iron on and empty stomach about 90 minutes to 2 hours before bed. Take iron with Vitamin C to improve absorption.

Low iron and low Vitamin D are correlated. Did you check your Vitamin D levels? Vitamin D blocks hepcidin and increases iron absorption. If you are low start with at least 4000IU and work up from there.

Magnesium helps to absorb Vitamin D. Vitamin K2 helps put the Calcium released by Vitamin D back into the bones.

As for taking iron every other day. Iron causes an increase in Hepcidin, it's the bodies way of preventing iron overload. Vitamin D will help with this. The way it was explained to me. If you take iron everyday the body will absorb less percentage of iron but more iron over all.

For example. 100 milligrams of iron daily, absorbing 20 percent equals 20 miligrams daily.

100 milligrams every other day, the body will absorb 30 percent, 150 percent more, but only 30 milligrams every other day. Which equals 15mg daily.

So yes, the body will absorb more iron every other day. One way to fix that is taking Vitamin D.

Good luck.

I suggest you explore the carnivore diet. I've been eating that way for 4 weeks and have been able to completely get off my DA meds. Nutrition matters.

I started taking ferrous pills and effervescent vitamin D, I have noticed a significant improvement in my RLS. I also take 3mg ropinirole at night. Lately I am sleeping longer stretches. Last night it was 9pm to 3am whoo hoo. I have been on ropinirole for around 3 years, they only work for a couple of hours, but since taking the iron its so much better.
