amitriptiline and Duloxetine

Hi,

I finally had success settling my severe RLS using Pregabalin (300mgs BD). Although not for RLS, I also take Tramadol for severe osteoarthritis. On occasions I used to also take Clonazepam but stopped it as it got me to sleep but I’d wake up later with what can only be described as a hangover without all the fun!

Starting CPAP last December also helped and I was advised I’d probably be able to come off RLS drugs entirely within a year so as you can imagine, I was delighted. I slowly dropped the dose of Pregabalin to 250mgs BD but had to go back up to 300 as symptoms returned.

I’ve been suffering from Sciatica sometime which has drastically reduced my mobility. I was referred to my local Pain Clinic and Amitriptyline was prescribed. I started it last week and can only describe it as returning me back to RLS hell! The Consultant said to give it 6 weeks but I cannot bear another dose.

If Amitriptyline was no use, I was to try Duloxetine. I’m just wondering if this will be as bad? I’m on warfarin so would need my INR checked more frequently but I’m not keen if RLS is triggered by it also.

Just wondered everyone else’s experience. Thanks in advance for help. The advice and support from the group is amazing.

Best wishes all.

Use this occasion to educate your doctors. They know zero about RLS.Amitriptyline and Duloxetine are listed on every RLS website as known triggers.

If doctors were taught the basics, they would know this.

Show them RLS-UK website AND NICE guidance which expressly states all anti depressants ( SSRI, SNRI and Tricyclical) will trigger and worsen RLS severely. The link to NICE and where it lists anti depressants as triggers is set out below. Show it to the pain doctor.

Stop Amitriptyline now. Refuse any anti depressants.

For nerve pain the best treatment is medical cannabis. I use it for my MS nerve pain.

Your pregabalin will also help so stay on the previous dose.
