Iron values and units for RLS patients

1. Total or serum iron

Units: micrograms per deciliter (ug/dL)

Range: men 65-175 ug/dL

Range: women 50-170 ug/dL

Range: children: 50-120 ug/dL

Recommended value for RLS patients: greater than 60 ug/dL (adults)

2. Per cent iron saturation

Units: per cent

Range: men 20-50%

Range: women 15-50%

Recommended value for RLS patients: greater than 16%

3. TIBC (total iron binding capacity)

Units: ug/dL

Range: 250-370 ug/dL

Recommended value for RLS patients: less than 400 ug/dL

4. Serum ferritin

Units: ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter)

Range: men 18-270 ng/mL

Range: women 18-160 ng/mL

Range: children 7-140 ng/mL

Recommended value for RLS patients: 100 ng/mL or better (adults)

(NOTE: some RLS patients may need a ferritin in the 200-250 range or even better.)

IMPORTANT: to obtain accurate baseline numbers, morning fasting is required for an iron test of all four parameters (also called an 'iron panel').
